Thanks Gatos!

Yes, the cam can be removed without having to take off the whole assembly.

Unfortunately, I needed to remove the whole assembly for fear other pieces of metal had dropped into the steering lock assembly. Luckily they had not. And yes the shear screws need to be drilled out in stages ie. 3/4/5/6/8mm.

Will check it out tonight. By the way, I was wondering if there is a need to replace the sheear bollts with new shear bolts. Wouldn't it be better to replace them with normal bolts giving you the ability to undo or tighten them easily in the future?

Replaced mine with normal bolts as I didn't have shear screws to hand plus we needed the use of the car. I know it defeats the purpose of a steering lock and makes life easier for a would be thief but if they've got that far what hope is there for the rest of the car.

If I stumble across some shear screws in the future I will fit them...just to torment the next person who has to remove them

I was actually thinking myself replacing the shear bolts. I simply don't see the point in them. Once you remove the lock barrel, you can easily bypass the rest.

Anyway, removed the rest of the lock and I know see exactly what you mean. I am not sure where that half circular metal bit goes. In the beginning I thought I broke something, but then realised that it was a part of its own.

Let me know if you want that small bit with the spring on it and I will send it your way.

Sure, send it on, in your own time, and I'll fit it if I encounter any problems with the current set up. Let me know the damage.

out of curiosity, does anyone know if the key barrel can be taken apart to recode the key? E.g. if i fit in a new barrel and would like to use back the old key, the key lock pattern has to have the same pattern, i have done this for my older bmw(90's) but have never seen the innerds of the x40 ones

This seems to be a weakness on these cars,on mine I just drilled out the steering lock, and haven't had a moments bit of grief since with my ignition barrel, only down side you won't have a steering lock again..

@ Kieran40: Why won't you have a steering lock any more? I've had no issues since removing those three little pieces in the above pic and the steering lock works each and every time.

@ Rexer: assuming it's the same fault on your car - if you can fish out the broken pieces, as per the pictures, then you probably won't need to remove the assembly from the column. Hope you get it sorted easily!

Because I literally drilled it out , and I wasn't on the forum back then I'm going back about 3 years ago now,it just wouldn't turn what so ever, but you don't need the lock tbh,it's immobilised so if there going to steal the car they need the key, unlike old fords, where you could just turn the steering with force break the s lock and pull the black electrical plug out and stick a key in or screwdriver, old vauxhalls you could break the whole lot with half a scaffold bar over the ignition assembly.i doubt they would steal a Volvo, they go for things like golf gti Honda accord type r or high value cars.
