I have just put a set of winter tyres on some Atlantis 18inch alloys I bought complete with four Contis, all delivery miles, that someone was selling after upgrading their wheels.I used the tyres when my originals were done at 15k, then switched to Nokians which have lasted much longer.
Just bought some Wintrac Xtreme 235/60/18 from Click on Tyres in Shipley and put them on the delivery mileage alloys, simply because I had them spare.
Otherwise I would have looked for a set of black steel wheels and gone for 17inch, so cheaper for the wheels and tyres.

With regard to chains, my local dealer (Newbury) were renting XC90 sets out last winter for about 25 pounds a week in unused - if you used them you paid the list price. The XC90 has a specific size, and the Volvo price is competetive with non-volvo chains.

(I believe it is law to carry chains in the French Alps, even with a 4x4 - May be exempt with studded tyres - my memory has faided)

I too am looking at winter tyres - has anyone tried Toyo Open Country Winter?

Just wondering, do winter tyres affect MPG at all?

A tiny bit yes, mostly due to the large thread blocks; but the cold weather (and associated extra idling/heater/electrical load) affects mpg much more than anything else.

Another oft cited mechanism for lower mpg in winter is increased aerodynamic resistance. Cold air is denser than hot air; wet cold air is denser than dry cold air.

Anyone come across these -

235/60 R 18 Avon Ranger Ice 107H XL

Click on Tyres have them for £110 - £32 cheaper than the Wintrac 4 Xtreme

Other sites have them considerably more expensive, so is it a genuine bargain, or are they to be avoided?

Cheers.
