I am a bit confused by this discussion. I thought that the 48 V battery was only charged by the starter/generator is this correct
As described the 12V battery is physically small. How is this charged by the car? There does appear to be an alternator on front left of engine if so this should charge the 12V battery in only a few miles.
Any way decided to connect my CTEK charger that I have for use with my classic cars. It took 90 mins to move off 3 to 4 status lights I am going out now at 2.5 hours to see where its got to.
Edit still on 4!

You are only putting in 4/5 amps per hour so you need to put it on overnight to get it 'fully' charged.
I do not know your car but I would have thought it had a 'big' 12v battery in the boot and a 'small' one under the bonnet.

Agree with timing if battery is flat but expected only few hours as a top up. Remember I use this charger extensively with classic cars.
Car is.MHEV so.battery in boot is 48V

Hi H,
Just thinking out loud but may be that if it is charging a 24v battery it will be 'slower'. The other thing is that as the battery gets closer to full the charge rate drops off as well.

Not sure, but earlier Mild-Hybrid models may have had a normal size 12v support/auxiliary battery and another 12v battery for start-stop.

The latest Mild-Hybrid models have a small 12v support/auxiliary battery and a 48v start-stop battery that is recharged by the starter/generator unit. Linking the 12v battery and the 48v battery is a DC to DC Converter unit, which from my understanding is responsible for stepping down the high voltage 48v to a low voltage 12v thus charging the 12v battery.

The starter/generator is a high voltage 48v unit.

There is no 24v battery on these cars and even if there was, trying to charge it using a 12v charger/conditioner wouldn't just be slow, it would never happen.
To charge a battery, you need to supply it with a voltage/current higher than its rating for the batteries charge to increase.

My mistake, I meant 48 volt. Surely as explained above, the Volvo has a system that enables/converts 12 volts in to a 48 volt charging capability.

I not sure thats the case. Hence my queries in my original post. The 48 V battery is charged by the starter generator
I connected my CTEK charger as an experiment expecting to get a top up charge rather than the depleted charge battery response I got

What does your owners manual say about jump starting and charging? Do they not direct you to the 'posts' under the bonnet?

Yes they do. Why the question?
