ok, so nr. 2 is dead spark plug.
now to identify it, i used the multimeter on ground and head of the spark plug,
space is pretty narrow but you should feel the spark plug like a pencil tip between the engine cover and the silver big horizontal pipe (egr cooler).
plug is exactly aligned with the injector.

if it is nr. 2 counting from the connector, it's easy to change, i told you earlier about the ratchet and cardanic cross, first it's a 6mm screw that holds the wire and the plug is 8 or 10mm, you need a long tubular.

you mentioned car not starting ? one dead plug should only worsen a bit the start at temps under 0 degrees c (bit more of cranking).

That's number 2 as marked on the connector

My car starts fine (so far) - I have the Glow Plug Relay Signal Fault Code...

What confuses me is why if there is a spark plug out I don't get a specific code for that. Searching VIDA there seems to be a process where you can energise the plugs and then read out the temp on them, but it's related to specific glow plug codes.

When it's light I'll have a look down the back and have a fiddle, check the connection etc and the plug itself.

Thanks for all the advice so far!

unfortunately vida doesn't tell you exactly which is the broken plug,
at least not on this model.

if the readout is 1 on multimeter(no continuity), most certainly the plug is broken, and as i told you it affects the start in cold weather, could be a problem under -10 degrees

Thought I'd dig this thread out, just managed to get in there and replace the plug - starts much better now and jumps into action. Had started to sound like a bucket of spanners over the last few cold mornings.

Code reset and hasn't come back.

Hi the glow plug relay on most seems to be behind bumper as you say but on mine which is a 2008 c70 2.0l (same basic car as yours) it is in the engine compartment fuse box in location number 12 (see inside of fuse box cover) it is brown in colour and cost me approx Ł10 from local Volvo dealer. I think this applies to all the 2.0d engines but easier to check for in first instance than taking off the bumper as I did to find it's not there.

Default 1.ECM-0380 Glow Plug Relay. Faulty Signal

Fuses 7—18 are of the “JCASE” type and should be replaced by an authorised Volvo workshop.
Fuses 1—6 are of the “Midi Fuse” type and may only be replaced by an authorised Volvo workshop.
Does anyone know why these fuses can only be replaced by an authorised volvo workshop? Thanks,

Because you are reading something that has been written by Volvo?

I would suggest it's so if someone buggers things up and fries an expensive component they have been warned!
