What is real bad about most new cars is that they are designed to fail not long after the initial or extended power train warranties have expired. So in most cases your new car is reliable (Or it gets fixed fairly quickly) for 3 years and then things start to break or wear out, BUT not the big ticket items in the extended warranty, they fail just after 7 years.
The car manufacturers are fully aware how long the various parts last and if one lasts too long, they find something cheaper to fit. Obviously some do fail under warranty, but the chances of a modern new car being worth more than peanuts after say 10 years are very slim, because they will have turned into nightmares requiring some very expensive replacements, that often have to be dealer parts.
In the end cars will be total recycle items, so you buy one and drive it until the warranty expires, then recycle it to the nearest dealer who bins it because it can't be sold.
Long live the days of quality engineering when built for life and not the warranty could be found at good companies like Volvo. I'm a firm believer in buying one good diesel car and keeping it until the Police, Insurance or undertakers stop it, or my partner more likely!
