Could the clutch make this noise? it doesnt make it when changing from 4th into 5th so i thought of left that out as it would make it all the time.

It does seem to be getting worse and more often. Like even just pulling away causes a small clunk that can be felt through the pedals?
Probably on the suspension & may be the steering rack.....

Have you checked the lower tie bar yet? Also look at the top torque bar bush if its the old round design- a new square one is available.

The engine does rock back an forth a fair way when setting off and changing gear.

I'm a bit confused by this and I have to get some new drive shaft bolts as I'm replacing my lower wishbones, need to undo the drive shaft bolts and so need to replace them.

However, when I've spoken to my Volvo dealer, they've not heard of using XC90 bolts and recomend just ordering the standard bolts that are specific to the V70.

I'm interested to know why the recomendation for XC90 bolts and make sure that they'll definitely fit!

Mine's a 2001 140bhp 2.4 manual. Is the above recomendation specific to another car or something?

Well im now getting a grinding noise when at the biting point with the clutch. So its making me think its the clutch causing the noise.

The noise happens when i come to a stop and the momentum of the car stops and then when i engage the clutch and pull away i get the clunk. It really can be felt through the accelerator.

Just worried about this noise the clutch is making especially when turning the engine on and off?

any ideas?

Many 'Dealers' just follow the computer, they get a code from the car, and follow the list of replacement parts until the problem is fixed. I can assure you there is no Volvo sanctioned piece of info stating fit the drive shaft bolts from another model. What you have on this forum (and others) are enthusiasts who think round a problem. Of course your dealer isn't going to suggest fitting XC90 bolts to a V70 just take it from those of us that have that it works. If in any doubt follow the dealer and keep giving him £££. HTH

What I'm trying to understand is why there is a recomendation to fit XC90 bolts. Kind of, what they offer that the V70 bolts don't, if that makes sense.

So they definitely, definitely fit to my car do they? I would have liked to have compared the 2 types of bolts, but the dealer had niether in stock....

There was a dealer technical bulletin describing the clunk noise and listing the XC 90 bolt part number to cure it about 4 years ago it was still current at the beginning of this year ..
You have to be sure it is the drive shaft clunk .. park the car on level ground with the footbrake and hand brake on ... with the engine idling select 1st ( or D ) lift the clutch a bit to get some drive , just enough to jolt the transmission without touching the thottle and listen ... then select R ( or R if auto ) and do the same , you only get the cluck when the direction is reversed as the shaft twists one way then the other , its most unlikely it will happen twice in the same direction ...

A search of this forum would reveal that the XC90 bolt has an additional conical bush.

@ Clan - cheers; understand why to get XC90 bolts now!!
@ Andy - not sure what the additional conical bush actually does?

So do you know if the XC90 bolt fits all V70's then (mine included) and do I just order "XC90" bolts, or do I have to be more specific about which XC90 bolts I need to order? IE are there more than 1 type of XC90 bolt?

The conical bush damps rotary shocks in addition to maintaining axial tension.

I believe the conical bush bolts have been superceded with the plain washer type.
