Hi,

Maybe I can clarify things. I am a Road Policing (traffic cop) Officer with an east of London force.

The legislation states that the side windows in front of the B post (what the driver looks out of) must allow at least 70% of available light through. The front windscreen must allow at least 75% of available light through. When the glass is manufactured it is tinted to that limit. The markings AS1 (windscreen) and AS2 (side windows) denote that. As far as Con and Use regs blah blah are concerned anything that changes it to a greater level of tint is is illegal. MOT testers are getting equipment to measure this soon, i am told!

Obviously there are different levels of being naughty.....My force uses the ACPO guidelines which say, between 75% - 50% - advice; 50% - 25% - £30 ticket, below 25% - 3points £60 ticket for vehicle in dangerous condition.

It has already been commented on how insurance companies may deal with the matter. If you have your front side windows tinted below 25% a traffic cop can and most do, prohibit the vehicle from being driven till the tint has been removed. Think about this one, if you are involved in a crash and the tints may have contributed to the reason why you crashed.........for example, if you didn't see the moped rider because he didn't have his lights on ....... you by definition will have been driving dangerously, if the rider were to die thats S1 Death by Dangerous Driving - oops! just because you wanted to make your car look different.

I don't want to be a bah humbug but keep the tints behind the B post or better still in my opinion keep it as Mr Volvo designing it.

I'll sit back and wait for the replies.......

glad to hear from a policeman who knows , i phoned Martlesham headquaters twice and got 2 different replies....neither correct.

i agree the insurance companies would love a good reason not to settle a claim in full because of the front tints.

Hi

PNuT, I can assure you that if me and my colleagues see a vehicle where for WHAT EVER reason the drivers view of the road is obscured they are dealt with accordingly.

my local MOT station hates the fact good cars need to turn up for a check and email the new cert to save adding to carbon footprint. this way they can do an MOT in less than 5 mins. lol
