DVLA Form V796 has all the information you need. Easily found by typing V796 in the search field on the DVLA website. It's a PDF and easily printed.
Helpful coppers hand them out to educate. I doubt anybody knows the fine detail of every law and regulation, but it's easy to research these days. Oh, and I think you'll find that most officers will carry rulers for their paperwork...

Must be some really picky coppers out there i tow all sorts of trailers with various different number plates on (different to car i mean) never been stopped yet and on my motorbikes some of the plates where tiny

This is not just cops though? VOSA? Insurer? it goes on and on the list that might notice....more so if there is a plate area set with the correct sizing.
