It is not just the police though VR - if you get someone really picky then they however you contrive it are illegal - I spent a lot of time looking into this myself because I wanted a shortened one.

Intrestingly I had a bit of writing put on the bottom of the plate (non offensive), where the dealer name is on my current plate, would this make it illegal? I ordered a second set for my dad's car at the same time and he wanted writing on the bottom of his, but everything else is ok and didn't get the post code either.
Yes, I know someone who has been pulled over and forced to change theirs (it was a jag XKR so quite easy to think V8 supercharged)...

See your point, but to notice 1mm it would virtually need a DNA lab accuracy investigation...!!!

When you say you wanted a shortened one, surely smaller than just 1mm difference.??..which then, ok, may have been a bit iffy.

DVLA Form V796 has all the information you need. Easily found by typing V796 in the search field on the DVLA website. It's a PDF and easily printed.
Helpful coppers hand them out to educate.

I doubt anybody knows the fine detail of every law and regulation, but it's easy to research these days.

Oh, and I think you'll find that most officers will carry rulers for their paperwork...

Well standard plates are all the same size - not really 1mm is perfectly obvious to anyone with a tape measure- I am only saying it because if you do get one they are however you put it not the correct size, most places simply use a frame these days set with all the right measurements, using standardized sizes.

As for not being pulled that is luck more than anything.

I do agree that correct size is the way to go. But 1mm to me, I wouldn't notice it, not even with a ruler!! Even with ocd and a a laser tape,I would find it difficult. Some of the cops must be so obsessive then!!

This is not just cops though? VOSA? Insurer? it goes on and on the list that might notice....more so if there is a plate area set with the correct sizing.
