The underside of the 850 was covered in a thin film of mud giving it a brown monotone hue. It wasn't thick so can only presume the previous owner who was a security guard had driven through some building sites to get to his work
Finished cleaning the underside. Before... After... The only rust I found on the car was the towbar. I contemplated removing the it to paint but decided against as the thought of replacing broken bolts wasn't high on my list of repairs. All rust removed and a coat of black paint Then cleaned the wheel arches, there seems to be some sort of underseal towards the inner reaches of the liners, does anyone know if this is how the 850 left the factory? Then finished of by cleaning the tar off the sill covers and giving tham a polish

Are you going to treat the underside with a wax or such-like? It looks minty fresh under there!

No plans to cover everything in wax, I'm wanting to keep it as close to factory fresh as possible and with it being my weekend car it won't be out in all weathers. If it's lasted this long without any rust I'm sure it will be fine as it is

Yesterday was the day the 850 came off of SORN and went back on the road so I took advantage of the sunshine and snapped some pictures.

Well that's chucking filly...
When I tried my air-con I couldn't get the compressor to kick in. According to my paperwork the last time the air-con was serviced was in 2004 by the original owner. So today I took it to my local to have it checked over. They pulled 200g of gas out and recharged with 750g of R134a with some fresh oil and it never worked. They noticed a broken wire at the compressor (I had seen this broken wire and thought it was a radio suppressor and decided to repair it at some point in time but it was still on my list) The mechanic repaired the wire and I now have freezing cold air-con. Shame the sun's gone now

I've driven 240 miles in the 850 this week and glad to report everything is perfect, air-con is icy cold and the engine temperature gauge sits bang in the middle. I checked the water level every time I was out expecting to have to top it up after giving it a full coolant flush but the level hasn't moved which means I've cured the leak at the waterpump so I can take out the can of coolant I've been lugging around. Happy days
EDIT: I mentioned there was a problem with the ride a few posts up which I've got to the bottom of. Turned out 'National Tyres' fitted two different sizes of tyres to the car. I ordered four of 205/50R16 and they fitted two that size and two 205/55R16. I also had them check the balancing and every single wheel needed re-balanced. I won't be buying tyres from them again...

Replacement front bumper arrived this evening. Stripped the bottom part off as I'll be using my own and gave the top a clean with paint thinners then a coat of MB Products Rubber Clenz which I did my back bumper with on Tuesday. Will give it another coat tomorrow once it's dry then I need to wait on new rivets arriving before I can fit it.
I also managed to get hold of an orange side repeater. The previous owner fitted two aftermarket clear ones and left the originals in the car but he must have broken one when removing it so I'll fit the orange ones tomorrow

Great thread, looking good!
How come you’re replacing the front bumper? Is it damaged or upgrade? Have you had good experience with the rubber clenz? I’ve searched quite a bit and found g-techniq c4 has had good reviews. Would be good to compare |

Thanks for your kind words, I'm trying to keep the car factory original hence my attention to detail. I've used G-Tecniq C4 a few times and it is very good, lasted about 6-8 months on my wife's Mini before it needed reapplied, the only downside I found was having to prep the plastic before cleaning as you need to ensure everything is squeaky clean to obtain the best results. I don't know how the Rubber Clenz will do, I have a feeling the dust is going to stick to the surface but as it's silicon free it will clean off easily enough to allow me to use the G-Techniq C4 if I need to. The Rubber Clenz is applied with a paintbrush so topping up isn't going to be a faff unlike the G-Techniq. I gave the front bumper a second coat this morning, willl leave to to soak in and dry then buff off the excess with a soft cloth to knock back the sheen to a more subtle finish The original owner's son told me when he sold the car there were a few bumps and marks on the front bumper which explains why it has been repaired. The chap who bought the 850 from the original family told them he was a Volvo enthusiast and he had been looking for an 850 for a while. It turns out he was a car dealer who was wanting to get a nice car to make a fat profit. Anyhow he had the front bumper repainted with textured paint in black and it looks awful and not in keeping with the car. I spoke to my paint guy and he said it would be almost impossible to replicate the original finish and to try and find another bumper I also fitted the orange side repeaters this morning so another little job that makes all the difference

The 850 just looks wrong with the white repeaters - Tango all the way!
