As a 'tail' to the Nivomat comment above .... the only way a Nivomat can fail is if it is visibly leaking oil. You cannot do the normal shocker 'bounce test' on them as it doesn't work. The car height at the back end has to be measured and then it has to be driven a distance to allow the Nivo to get to its correct working height for the load and then the heights measured again and compared. Nivos do not need to be replaced as pairs either. There are quite a few testers out there who are unable to recognise Nivos!!!

The leaking rear seal on the gearbox was a surprise as it was only out of the car last year when they change the clutch - the seal would be cheep it will be the labour for this that will hurt.

I've never heard of a corroded oil sump causing an oil leak, for that matter neither have my dad nor has father in law either and they've both driven cars more cheaply built than a 940!
Contrary to above regarding the sump it appears it can and does happen: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=99523 I'll see what I find on Saturday when I can inspect the car for myself. In the meantime I'll give Braydon's a call too.

If you have no luck with Braydons, give Lakes a try :

They have mountains of Volvos - literally!

It happened to me on a Sierra I used to have: corroded through from the outside... The garage advised just keeping on topping up, but it got to the point where it was getting silly - and in any case, I didn't want to be leaving oil slicks: some of my friends are motorcyclists...

I've had oil leaks on old Volvos, but the ones on that list are just a bit weird.

The front and rear cam-cover oil seals commonly go a bit, but not in a serious way.

The turbo oil return pipe can leak with boost and that's proportional to how hard you drive it, so easy to diagnose : similar to loose oil filler cap.

The sump plug sometimes leaks and that's literally a five-minute job to fit a new copper washer.
