On the 4 pot cars you can remove the gearbox without removing the subframe and leaving the RH engine mounting attached but you still need to support the engine with a beam or crane.

On the 5 cylinder D5 space it tighter and more items have to be removed. From memory it's best to detach the RH mounting to get the tilt needed to remove the box. That's why I suggested it would be a good time to do the belts - BOTH aux and timing BTW - as you can push the engine to one side to get much better access. Also from memory I think the 4 pot has the Ford MMT6 gearbox and the 5 pot has the more substantial Volvo M66.
Yes that's exactly what I'm saying. The gearbox side will be supported by the engine support beam, transmission jack or engine crane, depending on method, and the other side will be supported by the RH engine mounting. It's not under any extra stress, it'll just be at a slight angle.

However, I do see what you're saying about removing the RH engine mount all together and shifting the engine along with an engine crane, but I can't see a commercial garage going through the extra effort... we certainly don't anyway. The RH engine mounting will happily tilt down to an angle without being under any more stress, this is how clutches tend to be done.

I had mine changed at 110,000 miles when it began slipping. It only slipped very briefly and not by much but I noticed it. The biggest giveaway was the when re-applying cruise control to a higher speed the cruise control cut out if any slip occurred. I changed the clutch before it got any worse.

I didn't have to worry about the possibility of timing belt replacement at the time. I had that done at 100,000 miles when it was 10yrs old.
