Perhaps like the use of bus passes, the elderly and the teens should only be on the roads between 9:30 and 4:30pm - or would that be too controversial ??

Why 9.30 to 4.30 - They are much more useful picking us up from the pub!

Gererally speaking I have found that most young drivers ( although not all ) tend to drive too fast whilst most elderly drivers ( although not all ) tend to drive too slow.
It's a pity the boys in blue aren't as keen to enforce the law about not proceding with the flow of traffic as they are about dishing out speeding tickets. Assuming that the definition of a young driver is 17yrs old and assuming the definition of an eldrly driver is 65yrs or over, does this suggest that our driving skills are at optimum around the age of 41 ? can I also add, most van drivers ( although not all ) tend to drive too close ! wvm . |

Hi,
I must admit that our "elderly" driver do seem to be slower than the general flow of traffic. Add to that the fact that if they were bad drivers when younger, they will likely be worse when older... I found myself beside an "elderly" woman who found herself in the wrong lane (in her desperation to get where she wanted to go quickly surprise there!) wanted to turn left into me to avoid the right turners blocking her path!!! If they were stupid and inconsiderate 30 years ago - they'll not have changed..! Des. . .

Woah, steady guys, lets step back and take a look at this for a minute, we cannot go around branding people regardless of their age. I agree to some extent that perhaps SOME elderly people should not be on the road, I personally know one old chap who admits his sight is not what it once was and agrees that he should not be driving, but he passed his last test at the age of seventy five and cannot imagine getting around without his car.
I personally do not want to be driving behind or in front of my elderly friend when he is behind the wheel. On the other hand there are a great many elderly people out there who's sight and reflexes are perfectly adequate to handle todays driving conditions and as such have the same rights to drive on the roads as everyone else. If anything I would suggest that young drivers age 17 to 21yrs should be made to take compulsory lessons and tests in advanced driving skills to enhance their own driving abillities, perhaps then the accident rate among young drivers would start to be reduced. |

I have a family friend who is 85 and still driving in a reasonably competant manner. However, he has decided that enough is enough and is 'retiring' this year when the car tax runs out.
I just wish I had some of the qualities of young drivers;- nerves of steel, absolute infallibility in the knowledge that nothing ever happens to them and if it does it's not their fault anyway. The quality I most admire is their radar. How do they know that when they overtake on the crest of a blind hill that there is nothing coming the other way? Paul |
