Peugeot 306 2.0 HDI, Astra 1.7DTI, MG 2.0TD.

Basically thinking of a reliable diesel to cut my costs down.

Any thoughts?

In my personal opinion, out of the three the Astra would be my option. Peugeot? No, french, they don't know what they're doing. It'll break! Astra will be average at most things but will at least work and be reasonably cheap to get parts and the MG? It's a rover...Need I say anymore?

If you want a diesel why not just get a 1.9D? At least you know they'll be reliable and they're still good for 50mpg?

Ah but the 306 was reliable! The 307 was utter "beep"

The Rovers are actually reliable long as you avoid the K-series engines *headgasket* Diesels don't have this issue. The Astra though is a sound choice.

Finding a decent 1.9D isn't easy!

The 306 would seem like bit of a step back from the S40 wouldn't it? 306's are in the corsa/saxo/fist time driver category....

I would strongly disagree on Rovers reliability but each to their own lol.

Out of the three the astra would be the best bet tbh. I know a lot of people with vauxhalls + I used to have one myself, they're just a standard car really, nothing special about them but nothing to really moan about.

Only a couple I'll take a lot more over the weekend once I've cleaned her as she's bloody filthy.

The engine bay is a lot cleaner since this pic:

I have skinned knuckles from spending a couple of hrs out in the garage cleaning the engine bay.....You can eat your dinner off her toned tummy now

Axionknight: Yes the cambelts have been done (twice) yes the waterpump replaced too...she has wanted for nothing in the hands of her previous two owners.

Negative, the 306 is in the Astra/Focus/Golf category.
The 206 was the Corsa/Saxo competitor.

The 2.0 8v HDi engine is a good reliable unit, capable of Volvo-challenging mileages (Waay over 200k). As for the French thing, look at what it's being compared to: an Astra and a Rover!

Let's put this into perspective for a minute, if you're looking at getting an old Astra/306/Rover, you're clearly only after a very cheap run-about and the odd rattle shouldn't be a deal breaker. As has been said, the 306 isn't that bad and the 307 is much worse.

You say you'd strongly disagree with the Rover reliability slander? I'd assume that's because you've owned them before and, contrary to popular legend, they weren't that unreliable for you.
Funny that. Reminds me of a certain French hatchback from the 90's...

Besides, when it comes to the first corner you'll be glad of the 306...

I thought we were on about on Astra H not one of the older ones. I'm not sure, I had a load of friends back in collage who owned 306 and they seemed to me like the small cheap run around cars first time drivers own.

also, in regards to the Rover reliability, unless you buy the ones with the BMW engines in which are slightly better, yes, they are shockingly bad. I see more rovers at the side of the road than any other make of car and have relatives and friends who would agree Maybe they've all just had bad ones but from what I recall they are known for being cr*p cars in terms of reliability. I certainly wouldn't drive one.

The Rover/MG would be my last choice if I'm honest. The S40 1.9D would be good if I could find a good example. The 306 I picked because the 2.0 HDI engine does 55combined, cheap road tax and fun to drive.

The Astra is a good car but a tad bland really, still reliable!

Any recommendations would be great from anyone on here
