Hi to all,
have just joined after having purchased a 1998 (89 k with FSH) v40 TD estate. The 1st / reverse gear selection was not easy but I thought it was being unfamiliar with a different car. But wife found it impossible to get reverse ! So off to the garage (Walkdens Volvo at Chorley). They knew exactly what the problem was, simple cure if you know what you're doing said the service manager, then he said bring it in and we'll do it and charge you the massive amount of £ 35 + vat ! 2 days later job done, drives great, wife happy.
regards
Allen

Your info was really great, I have a friend who dabbles at mechanics & he found that the bush (54) on your diagram was missing an 'O' ring & had a bit of wear. A new 'O' ring later, jobs a good 'un.
Many thanks for your fabulous info.

Sorry to be the umpteenth person to request the gear linkage diagram but, I too have the wavering gearstick and hard to engage 1st/2nd syndrome.

Hope you don't mind sending me on the diagram.

The car's been like this for a while and is slowly worsening, but the missus borrowed it while hers was in for a service - couldn't work out the 'system' to get it into reverse !!

Best to get it done before it completely comes off in my hands.

Regards

Homer

***Update****

Found this link after searching the forum further Changing the front gear linkage bushes.

Looks like a great walkthrough with the part numbers included.

Searching the forum first [or longer] next time.

Paul.
Replacing the bearings? Which ones.
Mine is just in the garage having a cv joing and whatwe thought was a wheel bearing whine - but turns out to be a whine from the gearbox - poss diff bearings.
Not sure I want to go down the route of a new (well 2nd hand, but new to me) gearbox...

Default New car feeling!!!

Finally got round to changing the bushes - engaging reverse had become a 6 or 7 attempt struggle.

1 x S/V40 Series, Manual, Gear Shift Bushing Kit (PFV904391) = £13.17 incl vat + del

The kit had about a dozen different O rings/bushes inside - the mechanic replaced one on the gear shift and one on the linkage.

The car is almost showroom in comparison to yesterday

Took 20 minutes [and 2 boxes of biscuits ]

What an amazing difference.
