When I did this last year on our 98 Celebration Estate I had hoped to change the whole assembly as ours was gummed up. Sadly it's discontinued and like hen's teeth outside of Sweden. I initially ordered a fuel pump from Skandix, which turned out to be the wrong one - so ignore what they have written on their site. I then went to the actual Volvo dealer with the VIN who supplied almost the correct part. I say almost as I had to do some modification to some of the lines to make it fit. If I have the P/N I'll add it here in the next 24 hours, otherwise I've lost it.

I cleaned up the assembly and tested it in a bucket, along with the fuel level sensor. I was surprised how well it cleaned up. If I could do it again, though, I would replace the small folded metal arm used to read the level - it wears out and ours sticks from time to time. Good luck with it. It's a bit fiddly and time consuming, and if you have the physique of a gymnast that would be a plus.. but after a while you sort of get used to how it all works, the orientation etc., and it all goes back together fairly well.

I found the pump supplied by Skandix to be a perfect fit. The only thing I’d do differently if doing the job again would be to double check the polarity of the new pump matches the old one. I’m sure it did, but it was just another unknown while trying to resolve a longstanding problem.

Under no circumstances should the pump be run dry on the bench. Testing it in a bucket of fuel would be the way to go. Carefully.

I wrote up my experiences of refitting the fuel sender towards the end of this thread if anyone is interested.

The main difference between pumps is that prior to 1995 the in-tank pump was a low pressure feed pump supporting a main pump under the car. Later cars had a single, high-pressure in-tank pump. For obvious reasons it would be undesirable to confuse the two.

Hi Nutco,

I sourced the in tank pump from a recommendation from Laird Scooby, Rock Auto in the US, model selector on website worked for me, I also ordered filter sock from them, and the big lock ring seal was from FRF Volvo in Wales. Unfortunately I can’t find my both are listed on paperwork. Strainer was Airtex FS1 or 8421.23.0090. Sorry tank seal was actually from Brookhouse 1367623

Good luck
Steve

Brookhouse will probably sell the Bosch pumps as well. I got a Bosch one from Ebay and it was only £75.00

Nutco's car is also a single pump so he doesn't want the same pump as Steve

Not sure £75 it's a big expense on a job you really don't want to be doing again

Pay more and buy once, I'd happily spend the money on a Bosch pump. I did so for my 360 and it was a straight fit without issues other than the connectors being eyelets not spade connections which took a minute to swap over.

Don't forget your SPOOKY20 discount code on checkout. £70.83 then!

I bought a Bosch pump on Ebay as well. All good and straight fit, as far as I remember.
