Had a look at liqui moly online, including Cheshire5's videos and I might just give that a try next weekend. I will be doing the acetone/atf soak in the cylinders for the week.
I will also go and quizz a pair of local engine rebuilders about their experience of D5s and worn cylinders/ rings.. |

I'll let you know my compression/leak down figures on Wednesday after the car goes to the local Volvo dealer.
If its down on compression I'm not going to dick about stripping the engine to check if I can get away with rings, It will be getting a reconditioned engine. I'm surprised that your results are dropping. Are you sure the battery is fully charged and spinning the engine over fast enough? |

Battery was fully charged and providing more juice than I had during my first tests, I too was surprised but It is kind of logical, the solvent is acting on the gunk on the sides of the piston, which would have been acting to contain compression, less gunk less compression,.... only real hope is that as the gunk dissolves allowing the rings to operate.... I am not really confident that this will work but its worth the wait.... car is off the road anyway... |

If the gum/funk has been providing that much compression I wouldn't hold out much hope for the bores.
Have you tried starting the car since you began this process? If the compression is that much worse Inwould think you'll notice a depreciation in starting performance. |

They had an engine recently that had head problems which were fixed but then the cleaning process caused low compression. |

So the independent garage had my car in today. His opinion was that it is breathing quite heavily and it probably is the rings. He spent a while looking for a recon engine but couldn't find one available.
He has flushed the engine using a BG products additive and changed the oil/filter adding another additive from BG designed to help free up rings. The result so far is a very smokey engine. I'm inclined to believe it has done something, removing gum from around the pistons but if it is going to be a benefit, only time will tell. Should have done enough miles by next week to tell if the smoke has settled down. |
