Yes - £3,100 - wow!

I couldn't help noticing the final bid was from someone with an eBay score of '2' - maybe is is genuine and I'm too cynical...

... we'll see.

I was curious, and so had a look at the other items this dealer has for sale, what an eclectic mix:
- Rolls Royce RB534-2 'Dart' Turboprop
- 1931 Vintage/Historic caravan 'Angela'
- 2002 Ford Excursion Limousine, 27ft long
- 1929 Morris Oxford 3/4 Doctor's coupe
He/she seems to specialise in odd stuff. I'm guessing he/she purchases stock from winding-up and estate probate sales; perhaps that is where the red 240 came from.

If I'd just bought a motor car from him/her with no MoT I don't think that would make me confident that it was a good one :-).

This is interesting from 10 years ago:

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showp...80&postcount=5

... talking of 240 prices (in 2012):
Plenty around, though not as many as there were a few years ago. prices have gone up too, expect to pay £500-£800 for a runner with MOT/tax but some work to do, and the upper end is up for debate - a few months ago I'd have said £1500 for a pristine one, but I've seen a few go for over £2000 now.
Now we talk of immaculate cars making £5,000 and £1,500 for a runner and rider with a MoT. How times have changed!

And that's what I remember, as it's around the time I started looking at them; I was about 13 and being drawn into the marque by the aged Volvo B10M coaches on the school route. For a while it really looked like a 240 would be attainable as a first car and there was still a good choice available in those days. I was working on the assumption I'd spend up to £1,500 and the insurance wasn't looking any worse than a modern Polo, Fiesta, or other typical first car. I suppose there aren't many claims involving 240s driven by 18 year olds! This ended up being true of my S60 too.

In the end it wasn't to be though. Although I got my license when I was 17, I had no practical use for a car and as my anticipated income was going to be virtually nil for a while, it didn't make rational sense at all. And values were already going up by then (2016/2017) - in hindsight, I should have bought one before I had my license and found somewhere to keep it for a few years, but it probably wouldn't have worked in practice. By 2020 I finally had the business somewhat stabilised and could justify buying into an extraordinarily expensive hobby, but it ended up being an S60, mainly because good 240s had gone from the market and what remained were asking a bit more than I was then comfortable spending.

What a super story.

So, in the past 10 years prices for 240s have roughly doubled. That is too simplistic of course, the biggest change has been the introduction of the historic vehicle taxation class by the government in 2015. Back in 2012 the youngest 240s weren’t even 20 years old, and so at the nadir of value. The oldest ones suddenly became more valuable when the law changed in 2015, and pulled the rest of the market along a bit.

Now almost all 240s are at least 30 years old and so not far from tax exemption if they have not qualified already. There is still a balance between the cost of ownership for non-historic 240s and them appreciating. Keeping a 1990s car for a decade might cost about £5,000 in fixed costs; most won’t appreciate by that much when they reach 40.

:-)

New listing just seen!!!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275508763...Bk9SR8yRobb_YA

Looks a fantastic car, probably one of the cleanest MOT histories I've seen, but still a wedge of cash

Cheers
Steve
