Ah, but, you need to know the reg it has been changed to. I suspect he's not letting the UFC 50X plate go with the car and has applied for a retention certificate or to transfer that to another car and has an "age related" registration for the 740 Turbo.

He's talking utter bolony when he says "cheap to run when the intercooler is engaged" though.

Ah yes, Dave: I think you have it there. UFC50X must be the old registration and chumney is in the process of either selling it or transferring it to retention - and the DVLA has not quite kept up with things.

I didn't know what he meant about the intercooler, I rather assume he has mixed it up with the overdrive.

I experienced similar when i bought my Jag Alan, it had previously been on a "cherished" plate (Irish plate GJN or similar) and had been transferred to either an age-related plate or perhaps the original. The two funny bits (ironic?) were that the cherished plate was back to front for his initials (he was John George if memory serves) and not only did the age-related plate contain the same letters but the digits have a Jag reference originally used alongside the original S-Type as a sister model with similar styling cues.

Just for fun, those digits also relate to my birthday but the letters don't really mean much.............

As for the "during the transfer time", there was no MoT history to be found and i was about to give up on it. Then it suddenly appeared so being happy with what i saw, i went and bought it after a test drive.

Interesting thread!

Genuine question - should you chaps not be happy that values are increasing as ultimately it leads to more of these cars being restored and saved from the scrap man?

Yes there are a few overpriced cars, but this is true with any marque.

The youngest of these cars in now almost 30 years old so you can't expect an immaculate or documented service history! If a car has been laid up it obviously not have any history if it's not used.

Condition is far more important than an immaculate history in my opinion.

That's all very true and valid, however there are many people that that will only buy a car with fVsh, all invoices for genuine parts and so on. These are the people that will pay the over-inflated prices for cars like these so eventually they will sell. Maybe!

All that said, i subscribe to the ssame school of thought as you, overall condition is more important than alleged mileage and year of registration. If they come with paperwork backing this, that and the other up, that's a bonus.

Easy to answer, and yet complex.

If the cars were SELLING for a high price then that would be good.

But they aren’t. I could point you to half a dozen cars (I won’t as I don’t have time) that have been for sale since covid outbrake when I first looked at them. Not all Volvos, some BMWs and Range Rover p38s also (I look at the old Volvos, E38 and P38).

Many of these ‘mint barn finds’ are still for sale 2 years later by the original seller.

Lots also have no MOT now and are not used.

What we have is a situation where cars are not changing hds as everyone says ‘look at that 240! Even with 9 owners, 210k on the clock and corrosion it’s worth £6,500’. This issue is the £6,500 cars are for sale in perpetuity.

No one should be annoyed at anyone selling anything for any price, that’s perfects fine, but it is ok to comment on these frankly silly prices asked.

You would think that the sellers would learn after 2 years that they may need to try a different strategy?

That 740 has been on car and classic with a single rubbish photo of a seat for about 6 months!

Absolute load of rubbish the description.

Another weird comment about the economy "Very economical when driven in injection mode."

... a very good question... and a very good explanation as well.

None of us are upset at 240 prices increasing (our own motor cars will be worth more) but is irritating to see any old piece of junk being advertised for a very high price. Non-historic 240s do sometimes make over £6,000, but from our observations in this thread they have to be immaculatto.

:-)
