Known as the 'Coffin hood' in the US. basically the upper trim levels (GLT, GLE) and 260 got it for a few years, I'm tempted to say 81-85 or so? Anyway, it's a different bonnet and grille, headlights stayed the same.

It's all down to personal taste, but can't stand it personally, I think it looks like a naff attempt at imitating a Rolls, the kind of thing you'd see on a chinese economy car.

Did your dad go to the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday, as there was a spitting image of this parked at the far end of the field where you walk to the gates. I would have taken a picture but only spotted it on the way out, by which time my camera battery was dead!
Wasn't him mate

Yep it's an 84 GLE.

Never even knew of the different bonnet and grill until now.

My dad's loving driving it again - its been sitting in the garage for coming upto 10 years. Just sorted a clutch fluid leak and serviced it and still drives likes its only done 90 miles on the clock not almost 90k.

as far as i'm aware yes it was the gle and glt's that got that. it was on the first generation of the last configuration (if that makes sense!!)

i think it was a shorter run than that more like 80-83 as i have a 1980 owners manual with a DL that has the late headlights but a flat bonnet and the flat "group a" grille. as well as the low profile single vent scuttle (probably different to say a 100 series one despite looking the same!!)

after that the whole range got the final configuration as we know them- extra side mouldings, a rear skirt/valance to better cover the spare wheel wells and the slightly raised centre bonnet along with the two vent scuttle with profile to match.

the dash introduced in 1980 was unaltered other than relocation of radio to the top around 88 till the end of the run.

thats as much as i know! perhaps theres more to it than that

Nick

260s got the 'coffin nose' from 1981 MY.

All 240's had it for 83-85MY.

If you have a look on the members area of the main VOC website, you can download almost all of the brochures which show the different model years.

I was getting worried for a bit as my old B reg 245DL had the bullnose front.I still have the grill somewhere but it's very tatty.Just a keepsake from my first Volvo.
As said each to their own.I happen to like the older twin headlight cars.I had a 3Litre Austin which was twin headlight and a very wide alley grill.
Regards Brian.
