I do notice it went up very quickly to £2,600 (in a matter of hours) but has stalled there for a couple of days. That seems a bit suspicious to me - if I was going to bid on an auction I'd keep my powder dry until late, not in the first 24 hours.

I'm still at a loss to understand that motor car's popularity; it too has a 19 year gap in its story with no explanation (maybe it sat under another apple tree).

:-)

Not everyone is auction savvy. Bidding early can be the sign of a novice buyer. Even the ad-clowns at eBay encourage, “ bid now so you can get a deal”, some must believe it.
I’d rather it be that than anything sinister!

Truth is you could be right Alan.

Looks like Pugh Pugh Barney McGrew et al has been polishing the 740 at work, at least no hosepipe bans at work I suppose😀

Nice car and clean MOT history, but a tad pricey methinks

Cheers

For that much money it would have to be a 760 turbo in that condition to be worth it, as lovely as it is and it is very lovely it isn't worth the money being N/A, atleast it has the correct gearbox.

Default How not to sell a 30 year old 240

We have been discussing whey some motor cars sell well, and others don't. Here is a good example of how not to advertise an older car:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265934094994

... just 5 pretty poor photos and a one-line description.

This is a 177,000 mile, 33 year old nondescript motor car. It is a long way from being an historic vehicle and there isn't much classic about it. The seller is looking for £4,000 - there is a greater chance of me becoming an archbishop than it achieving that price.

:-)

I'm a bit more cynical about people than you are Andrew. I'll be convinced this has been a fair auction if we see some more bidding than occurred on the first day of the 7 day auction... and if we don't see it re-advertised next week.

Same bloke has a similar advert for a £65k Ferrari and other, so called, high end cars.

Chancer!

I might have this quote framed!!!!

After receiving my D.Phil. in cynicism, I was awarded a Research Chair for it , an Emeritus position!😂

Mrs. Moomoo is amused.

What an eclectic mix of vehicles he/she has for sale (Volvo, two Audi TT, Ferrari and a dirt bike he/she doesn't know the name of). All the auctions are due to end at the same time, have few photos and not much of a description. One must assume he/she is a motor trader, which makes the poor write ups and lack of photos hard to understand.

The Volvo's MoT history doesn't look as beautiful as the motor car is described, indeed the current test runs out in just 4 days time.

I can't help myself imagining there is something a bit sinister afoot here, but I have no idea what it might be (too cynical?).

:-)

At least you can’t accuse him/her of a “hard sell”.

Say nowt, say nowt inaccurate.

I share your cynicism!

Almost certainly a small-time trader Alan, operating on the principle of "if you say nothing, nobody can say you said it was ok/good".

True mileage is probably 195k, based on a conservative estimate of 3k miles a year since the odometer packed up in 2016.

Most of the recent MoT history is fairly good and/or cowshed confetti advisories for the tester to cover his back eg :

"Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

Nearside Rear Suspension rod pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement as marked (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Offside Rear Suspension rod pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement as marked (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i)) "

It has had some welding back in 2014 but no mention since of any serious corrosion unless i missed it. Due a timing belt change i would think, given the odo has been inop since 2015/16 time when it stopped at 177256 miles. Probably a VDO speedo so should be fixable fairly cheaply (but not necessarily easily) but either way, i'd hazard a guess he will re-MoT it on purchase as he's listed it as having MoT until October next year.

With that in mind, the MoT will almost certainly have advisories such as rear suspension pin or bush worn but not excessively, front brake backing corroded, rear springs corroded and similar but otherwise a clean pass. Whoever buys it would be best advised to put it in for an independent MoT elsewhere for peace of mind and change that timing belt as well as fixing the speedo.

It's too bright and shiny looking for my liking, hidden in a shady garage/outbuilding/compound to hide things that can fade into the background and probably not be noticed on a direct visual inspection.
