Interesting item from a Classic Car dealer!
It looks nice, but what is the betting that the seller paid going rate 3 years ago and now sets the sale with a 5 figure reserve? I don’t know, but 240s seem to be suddenly worth advertising at an absolute fortune. And the fact they don’t sell for months or years does not seem to deter anyone….

I'm thinking the opposite - that prices are falling. There are always 240s advertised at very high prices, but they don't seem to sell.

The Barge came with a current MoT and was running and riding, it is a bit closer to being 40 years old and is a GLE with some quite nice extras. The red motor car hasn't been used in 20 years, needs a fair bit of recommissioning, has no MoT (or history) and so will have to be trailered away, it is a DL model (although the only significant differences will be the cheaper seats and wheels, wind up windows, no central locking or sunroof and flat paint (maybe good things on an old motor car)). To its credit it does have only 44,000 miles (but not corroborated in any way) - however the Barge has less than 90,000 and one might argue that is probably healthier over nearly 40 years.

Assuming the Barge's price was about right, I'd say the red car was worth a bit less in that it will probably cost £800 to recommission (as long as there are no more horrors than the brakes and clutch) and get MoT tested, and another £300 to trailer away. The new owner will also have to pay tax for an additional year (so £300). It looks a nice motor car in the photos though, so someone might find 2 grand for a project.

That is what I was thinking; sometimes people buy things with their hearts rather than their heads though... we have seen that many times in these pages.

:-)

PS. I hope the sellers have not given a daft reserve, like say £3,000, otherwise it will be on sale for longer than the Bromsgrove motor car.

I see your thinking but I think you were lucky with the Barge. The advertising of the Barge put folks off, the wording was ambiguous and misleading. The car you bought was sound, it’s the story told about it that was suspect!

I wouldn’t expect much over £2k but it could be a good basis for someone who will enjoy its rejuvenation.

Andrew.

I’ve had another look at the advert .

It’ll have a daft reserve on it, I bet.

Same seller as the 265 GLE , last month. That made enough!!!!

Raised expectations?🤔

Maybe you are right Andrew, but I'm not convinced there are many folk out there that would buy a motor car without a MoT certificate for good money.

It is a nice enough looking motor car, but would certainly fit into the 'nothing special' category of the middling cars. It would take about a grand to get it home and ready for the MoT, so to me it would be a £1,500 motor car (if I didn't already have the Barge). Other folk may be less careful with their money of course.

:-)

Default Another digression:

Again, I know, this is nothing to do with 240s, with Volvos or even with motor cars: I had a dental check up this morn, usual stuff - no problems and as usual I got told off for grinding my teeth too much. The dentist then gave me a prescription for some strong toothpaste and mouthwash. I collected it from the chemist's shop next door and was amazed to receive this big bag of stuff:

... I'm not complaining of course (because I'm a tightwad and this was free to me (not to taxpayers of course)), but I do wonder why the NHS is giving away toothpaste and mouthwash when it is readily available to buy. Perhaps I should book a doctor's appointment and ask for a prescription for few bars of soap, some shampoo, a new pair of walking boots (to keep fit), Bob's food (to maintain my mental health)...

:-)

PS. We can go back to talking about motor cars now.

The bigger worry on this is that the toothpaste, mouthwash and bag etc probably costs £17 to the NHS per item, £40 to dispense and £35 for product fees/analysis etc.

And the manufacturer probably sells it for £4 an item in the shops! Lol!
The only good thing is it will still only be 40% of the price you would be charged in good ol USA.

To get back onto 4 wheels

https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C1512191

Looks like Pugh Pugh Barney McGrew et al has been polishing the 740 at work, at least no hosepipe bans at work I suppose😀

Nice car and clean MOT history, but a tad pricey methinks

Cheers
Steve

... yes, back to motor cars, and mainly Volvos :-)

PS. Yes, £8,000 is a great deal for a 740.
