Hi Alan,
The small piece of metal found in the dizzy.
Is it the spring steel from inside the rotor arm which assists with a secure hold to the shaft.

For what it's worth, that's how it's always been under my ownership. I've not touched the coil!

That's interesting - when checking over everything prior my last long drive in GAM (December 2021) I found the rotor arm to be very sloppy. It was a dark Sunday night so I just wrapped some insulating tape round the shaft to take out some of the play. I didn't spot this bit of metal, but is the likely culprit of the sloppiness.

Ah! Thank you for that, I’ve put it in a safe place, so I’ll see if I can work out where it goes tomorrow.

Alan

I think that one was overtaken by events David. I worked out where the armoured cable was hidden subsequently (there is a photo somewhere above).

Alan

Thank you for that David. I noticed a bit of tape and was going to ask you about that in the fullness of time. I’ll see if I can work out where the little bit of metal goes tomorrow, and will order another rotor arm as well.

Best wishes,

Alan

Wonderful! It was bugging me so I retrieved the little piece of metal from the safe place (never throw spares away) - and the rotor arm from GAM. I have re-united them:

... which has fixed the problem. Many thanks, that was very sharp of you.

More good news: I tracked down the Beru equivalent (405550040) for the Intermotor part (47040s) and found it to be in stock at Euro Car Parts in Kettering (5 miles distant) for only £2.19. I've ordered one for collection tomorrow.

:-)

Alan

Wow just caught up on the thread, I had no idea the original coil installation was so "quirky", my car is a late 1970 model so I'm assume it would have had a more conventional style coil installation?
It has had an electronic ignition upgrade at some time in its past so I haven't really given it much more thought than that, other than re-setting the ignition timing post gas conversion removal.
GAM seems to be picking up some pace now Alan!

Not sure when they got rid of the armored coil but 69 and 70 cars didn't have it fitted.
