Engine check light came on my XC60, 52kmiles, 2015.
Took it to Volvo dealer yesterday for diagnostic check, replaced EGR cooler valve under volvo warranty all within about an hour and half. |

Hi ChrisV60
You said : "they put this down to failure of the piston rings" How did Volvo report that problem ? Did you do, like me, some expertise ? Did Volvo change the piston rings ? If yes, it is possible to copy me your invoice/ fix order ? Thank you for helping me Regards Christophe |

I think the 2 problems are linked.
EGR not fixed make lot of soots. Soots come into the cylinder , soot + oil clog the piston rings. Then piston rings become inefficients. And then the motor burn oil. |

That's an interesting point, did the EGR clog the pistons or did the pistons fail and clog the EGR? They are definitely linked but the dealer was non-committal.

Orpington Volvo have checked it out and the intercooler is being replaced and Volvo are picking up the cost. the egr is leaking ?? so they are also replacing that but I have to pick up half the cost which is £270 give or take.
I'm quite happy with it considering it's out of warranty. what do you lot think ? |

I thought Volvo would 100% cover the EGR replacement.

I'm sure they said the egr cooler or something like that. and the egr was leaking so it wasn't the normal egr problem ??
I'm not much of a mechanic so don't know enough to come back at them. I will post what has been done once I've collected it and see what the paperwork says. so you think they should pick up all the cost ? it's a 14 plate with 89k on the clock and I've had it 6 months. It has had a full Volvo service history. thanks for the help guys/girls |

Do have a read of the last dozen or so pages on this thread, but it's my feeling that the cost of recent EGR and cooler replacements were fully covered by Volvo.
However your total bill seems a bit low for the replacement of both.
