OK, so it pulled a regeneration on me en route and had just dropped from 44.6 to 44.4 average when I reached the Shell station. Same side, same pump as last time. 48 litres went in (just!) after 490.4 miles. That's 46.44MPG calculated, against ~44.6 shown, which is about 4% more.

What is it with Vauxhalls getting attrocious MPG readings? Our Focus would still get at least 30MPG even if it was being driven like it's rally-car sibling. Makes no sense, other than to say that Vauxhalls are poorly engineered vehicles!! But we already know that.

To be honest I'm used to the high fuel consumption, what would I get from a 850R?

I'm currently averaging 36/37 from an S60 D3. The best I ever got from it on a long run sticking to national speed limits was 47/48mpg.
My previous EU III D5 would easily crack 53MPG on a run but these new DPFs are killing MPG in a similar way cats killed MPG in petrols. That's probably why pollution is on the rise but no one will ever hold there hands up and admit it.

I wonder how this average is calculated? Does it average for a specific last distance traveled? For example if the counter is reset then the car is driven over an year, does the mpg represent the average for the distance driven all the year?

Having a 96 940, I don't have the luxury of a trip computer, so I do it manually!
Its 16.5 gallon fuel tank (75L) when brimmed with Shell V Power Nitro+ can get me around 450 miles with general use (60 mile motorway commute every day with a wee bit of city driving thrown in when not working) - equating to 27mpg, or 525 miles when I kept it at a steady 56mph on the way up to Newcastle last month. That's just about 32mpg. Not bad considering my handbook states 25mpg!

You didn't need a computer on our old '97 Fiesta to tell it was getting amazing MPG! When you filled the tank to the brim (42 litres) and could reach 400 miles without going into the red you KNEW it was getting phenominal fuel mileage. Nothing has ever came close to that vehicle. God I would love to have a 50MPG car again, and that Fiesta had so much sentimental value to me.
