But are you sure the car is E4, or could that be a typo by whoever is selling it? I know of at least a couple of 05/05 cars, and they're both E3.

The 163bhp E4 is identifiable by the '2.4D' badge on the boot.

AFAIK, a 163 bhp car wearing a 'D5' badge would be the E3 D5, hence wouldn't have DPF.

Your 06-plate car was probably late-registered, and built around a year earlier. It does happen...I have a friend with Citroen GSA which was unsold for 3 years when new, and hence registered 3 years after the end of production.

Most 54-plate cars will be P2.5 (facelift) models with the Euro III engine, and a handful of 05-platers still have the Euro III engine (such as mine and Pandamedic's), but the majority of 05s will be Euro IVs, and yours is the only 06-plated Euro 3 I've heard of. I'm not denying that it's true, but it "shouldn't be", and a late-registration is the obvious explanation. Nothing wrong with that, either!

cheers

James

Thanks everyone.

It says '2.4D', so it is a EuroIV unfortunately...I shall keep looking

I wouldn't necessarily be put off a Euro IV. Just put your foot down occasionally. That is good advice for any engine - the Italian tune-up does them a power of good. The only person I know personally who has had any DPF problems at all drives everywhere on the motorway at 55mph.

cheers

James

Just have it removed. Some of the companies that do DPF removal also does re-mapping, so they would probably give you a good deal on removing the DPF and turning your car into a D5 at the same time...

I've just bought a 135.000 miles DPF car and it seems fine. Still going to remove it though...

That doesn't explain your friend's DPF problems. 55mph should be easily enough for DPF to regenerate, but it does need to be sustained for long enough... probably of the order of 20-30 mins or so. Mine went 60k miles without a DPF problem, being driven only on A/B roads at 40-50mph, but the journeys were about 60 miles each.

Aggressive driving will consume more fuel, which produces more soot, which creates more work for the DPF to do. Not usually constructive.

DPF problems arise when the car goes several hundred miles without getting to reasonable speed (say 40-50mph), AND sustaining that for long enough to allow regeneration (temporarily slowing for junctions, traffic lights etc won't affect it as long as the exhaust stays hot).

Even if your normal driving habit allows for that, you should consider whether there might be times when your habits change, such as on holiday, during snowy weather, etc. My own problems really kicked in when I retired from work, and also during a period I spent visiting relatives in town.

That's the thing that worries me with the DPF, as the majority of driving will be to and from work which is a 12 mile round trip mainly at 40mph. Having said that, at weekends she'd have a more sprinted run along the motorway, but not that great of a distance (probably 30miles).

Is there any difference in fuel consumption between the 163bhp EIII and EIV?

At the very very least 10%.

As an illustration my EuIII (V70 D5 5-speed manual) returned high 40's to mid-50's with mixed use and normal driving. If I really tried to eek it out on the motorway, mid-60's.

My EuIV (S60 2.4D 6-speed manual) returns mid-40's to late 40's. On a long run on the motorway 50's but with delicate right foot have got it into the 60's but latter is rare.

As an aside my V70 D5 185bhp 6-speed manual (V70 generation 3) never broke the 50MPG on the motorway runs, even after 20,000miles.

If it is a private car and you are happy with a ~6 year old car.....find a facelifted EuIII (as a rule they appeared on 54 plate and as late as 56). I would have one in a flash but company car rules preclude due to age.

On an unrelated matter - I have no idea how to differentiate EuIV other than the VIN. (Have known D5 badges replace the 2.4D on the trunk/tailgate).
