hi I have the following if you are interested, just distance maybe an issue unless you could arrange collection.
Full Grey leather interior. Fully working dash clocks. 4X Alloys in good condtion fitted with nearly new tyres. Passenger window switch in perfect condition, may even have one of the ones that light up and a drivers side one as well, as long as it only has front electric windows. Cheers Stephen

oh dear, that is tempting!
however, if your in cumbria? as i think you might be, then that option could be fairly impractical, even by my standards! ill get back to you after the weekend. however, the window swith=ches sounds very promising, as im a little cautious about buying them off ebay, in case i end up with another broken one. the ones I have came off either the 740 (none light up ones) or the 940 I converted to all round electric windows which light up.
Might be worth seeing what a courier might charge forthe items to be delivered.

Ok, here we go then,
On paul240480's advise, and having given it a good clean yesterday, here are some pics. sorry in advance for the shortage of pics inside, i hadnt had time to clean that, so i only took photos of the worst damage that i could remember at the time. i trust that no one needs to see a photo of the damaged headliner! WOW, that took a LONG time! uploading and resizing 16 12mp photos on photobucket! any way. Photos below, i have tried to photo the issues with the paint also. The good side! And again. The back, could do with some nice new light clusters, but clear indicator lenses ones that i would like are too expensive to bother. maybe if one NEEDs doing in the future i will bite the bullet! The front, needs two new fog light lenses, and also the same as the back on the indicator lenses front. also want to do something about the reflector strip, but think that they look weird without it. the cover off the towing eye is also missing, so if anyone has one in the right colour then that would be nice. This looks ok, but it is the bad side. Here you see why i say its the bad side. Missing hub cap ( half the reason why i want to go for alloys. i dont see the point in replacing these things. oh, and that big dent! Bin lorry, as you can see, the road isnt very wide! Same again. closer view oh, and the laquer is peeling on that door too! dont know if you can see, but there is a nice reason not to use staverton garage here, other than the fact that they're rip oof merchants! if you cant see, there is a nice pair of scratches where they dragged something across the bonnet! see the crack (bottom right on the second photo), and the fact that it doesnt sit in place right (because of the crack i'm sure). and the lense for the seatbelt light is broken too. Broken trip peice on the dash. Lack of dog guard allowed dog to attack the allready damaged passenger seat. there is also a bad burn on the o/s rear seat, so i want to replace the lot, preferably with leather or half leather. finally the dash lights (illumination) dont work (not sure if you can see). and the odo stopped at 167515, about 5 months ago. we're proud of the milage, even if it isnt all that high by volvo standards, so i would like to get this fixed. There is also some slight paint damage on the rear arches, no rust, but the paint has chiped, probably something to do with my over zealous use of the jet wash! Any response appreciated, and advice on what to do about the body damage would be nice too. hope you like them. Richard |

Richard,
Thanks for taking the time to post the photos. The car looks good; it's a shame about the damage. Were there any witnesses? Any possibility it can be claimed on the insurance of whoever owns the bin lorry? If not, there will not be a cheap and fully effective way of repairing it I'm afraid. The dent has creased and stretched the metal, so I doubt that a dent-master type outfit could get the panels flat again. The door is the worst panel. If you put a wanted ad on the forum and ask all members who go to scrap-yards to look out for one in this colour, you might just get lucky. The rear wing damage is less severe and might push out to some extent. I think you could access the back of that panel with all interior trim removed. If so, you need a helper to hold something (like a flat, smooth piece of plywood, with a thick rag over it) very firmly against the outside of the panel. Find something that you can push/slide along the inside of the dent. It must have a flattish surface with no sharp edges or corners. A hammer, turned sideways, might be good provided it has no corners. Put some grease on it and work it back and forth along the inside of the dent. You need to apply some force, but be smooth and don't hit it. If there is something you can lever against, that will help, but not too much. You're just trying to flatten and push the metal back little by little, each time you go along it. Work gradually along the highest point of the dent. Stop frequently and check what it looks like outside. Don't push it out too far. Be careful only to push the "high point" of the dent (inside the car). If you slip, you could dent the panel outwards above or below the original crease. It's quite tricky, and you will not get it perfect. But If you take your time and persevere, you'll be able to remove maybe 80% of the damage. (In theory, the technique might help on the door, but I don't think so. The dent is deeper and the panel wider; I think it will just distort outwards without a lot of improvement to the crease. Better to find a new door, as I said.) Don't be tempted to try filler on these dents unless you can afford to have the panels professionally sprayed afterwards. With a metallic finish like yours, DIY spraying will give a poor result; probably would look worse than doing nothing. Cheers John Last edited by john h; May 31st, 2010 at 18:12. |

Hi Richard, your car seems to be in pretty reasonable condition despite the lorry damage. The colour is nice. My car also has lorry damage on one side.
I've taken these photos of an old speedo head. The speedometer worked but the odometer and trip didn't. The first photo shows the speedo head removed from the cluster and the face/bezel taken off. The second photo shows the PCB separated from the counter unit. Just remove the two screws from the motor to separate the PCB. The third photo shows the gears that sit between the motor and the counter unit. In this case the small gear has a tooth missing, which is why the odometer wouldn't work. On my car I replaced the whole instrument cluster when my odo failed but I found that the replacement had its own little problems. So I nicked the little gear from the replacement cluster and put it in mine. About 30k miles later it still works but I'm sure it will fail again one day. New replacement gears are available somewhere on the net but they are very expensive. Yours might have a different problem of course.

thanks,
JohnH, i have no intention of doing anything to this myself, firstly because it would be too much work, and my budget doesnt go that far, and secondly, as i think will (oldblue) says in his thread, they dont bother you all that much after a while. there is another small dent on the o/s front wing (near those scratches) and some damage on the roof, and bonnet, so if i ever have the chance then maybe i will get a friend who is an accident repair specialist to fix them all in one go, but untill then it will remain. i agree though, that the door must be replaced rather than repaired. Old Blue, HOW did you manage to get that speedo head off? i have had ours out several times and had no sucess. i can detach it from the main guage pod, but cant see how it is removed from the blue pcb that goes across the width of the pod. i dont really want to have to do soldering on that unless its absolutely necessary, and i felt as though i was going to break one of the joints if i wasnt careful. do i have to do soldering? if so, is it difficult? my onle real experience is easy circuits in DT in school, and a repair i once did on a laptop computer. aparently thats the part whch fails on them all, and i know thaat ipd sell one for a 240, with a dvd instruction set. better than factor part, but including postage from the US its around £40 or something. too much when you consider that its a gamble weather it will even fit or not. Just a thought, does anyone have a blanking plate for the switches to the left of the steering column, as we currently have a trailer indicator warning light fitted there, but the plate its fitted on is cracked. i would like to move it into one of the unused warning lights on the main guage set, but can see that this would be quite a bit of work and would need a new blanking plate anyway. thanks for the kind comments on how it looks, it normally scrubs up ok, but the interior is definatly a let down! hopefully that will be sorted soon though. just a thought, the focus of this seems to be moving from wanted parts to project, so do the admins want to move this, or do they want me to start a new thread in project, leaving this one just for parts needed? If you carefully peel off the face from the plastic thingy it should reveal some small self-tapping screws. Before you can peel the face off you will need to prise off the needle. There is no soldering required unless you discover a faulty component or dry joint etc. This is from memory but I can take some pics if you need some.
To have this moved to the project forum click on the symbol and ask the mods if they could move it for you.

If you want to start a new thread for the restoration work and leave this for sourcing parts that's fine.
