Having the tyres in stock is an issue. Kwik Fit mobile are actually quite good. If 4 x centres have 1 x tyre each they drive round and piclk them up before coming to your house/workplace to fit them. Most kwik fits can get the tyres next day is none in stock.

I'm seriously thinking about changing to summer tyres now. Here's a question. We'll all discussed winter tyres to the Nth degree and the tyre hotels etc. Does it work the other way I.e. Buy summer tyres in kwik fit and they store the winter ones?

This is crucial information. Where is the shortfall - if the fullsize wheel too big in diameter or is the wheelwell too shallow to take the fullsize width, and is so by how much?

Well, in a roof box might be an option on some journeys. I sometimes use a roof box when moving offspring to/from university. (they actually travel inside the car you will understand)

When you get your car you will realise how impractical that would be - guess it would save you going to the gym to do weight lifting though - you may even get into the Olympic team after a few times trying to do this

I did some research (ie I got out a tape measure). My roof box is relatively large but it won't quite take a rather large XC60 wheel. So unless you have a very wide roofbox the idea is unworkable, quite apart from the difficulty of huffing the wheel in and out.

As to the boot wheelwell, it seems it is not large enough either, although I don't have precise dimensions.

The way it would work then is as follows: Most of the time the fullsize spare would stay at home in the garage. Then in the event of a puncture I would have to get home on the spacesaver, but with the knowledge that there was a good wheel at home. Additionally I would not be dependent on: a) A tyre fitter being open, b) them having the right tyre. The damaged tyre could then be fixed at leisure and in the meantime I would be back to having a useable spacesaver if needed. For specific longer journeys, the fullsize spare could be put in the boot and the space it occupied tolerated. In any case there would still be the option of going straight to a tyre fitter (although I find it best to phone round a few to both enquire about availability and to haggle down the price).

However, that is not the final definitive statement. I am still concerned about directional tyres which would render the idea of a fullsize spare unworkable. (Please - no suggestions of two fullsize spares, you would have to take a trailer with you).

pirelli p zero rosso directional are not available for the XC60 i.e 235/60/v/103. the SUV pirelli p zero rossi's are asymmetrical only. you would only need one.

I must have a bigger XC60 than yours because I got all 4 in at once without any problems. I'm changing my wheels and tyres today in the next hour or so.

How about fitting Run Flat tyres? You can take the tyres of your rims and use them as spare tyres. Of cource you will have to buy additional rim.

Here's a link on the benefits of Run Flats.

maybe different tyre size? I couldn't shut the boot without fear of rear screen shattering.

Where you storing the winter shoes Teejay?
