I have a 52 plate V70 D5 Auto and the computer is reading 38.3mpg.

I rarely see the Mway.

I must say that I think the computer is a tad optimistic. I especially hate the way it tells me I have 660 miles to empty after a fill to the brim(which cost £91 today!!) but then only goes about 400-450 miles.

They older engine (black top 163bhp) is much more frugal than the newer one and they are very good on fuel, as long as you can avoid touching the brakes.

52 plate 163 Auto (5 speed) , 112K on the clock.

I get at best 40mpg with a mix of driving.

At 70mph the rpm is about 2500 rpm....but at 70 on the clock you are doing 63 as it over-reads by 10%.

I am amazed if someone gets 50mpg on the motorway as I can't get that with cruise control at 70 on a level road....with a following wind.

It will do about 550-600 on a tank....not sure if that is 10% over in view of the speedo inaccuracy?

Not bad for a big car on an auto box but a manual will beat it hands down.

My 2003 D5 163 manual averages 45mpg over the year. On a run it's certainly bettering 50. Speedos are allowed to read -0/+10% + 2.5 mph but rarely have I seen it. Generally the speedo is set up to overread when the tyres are worn which is only a few percent. I suspect you have non standard tyre diameters to overread by that much. How are you measuring the true groundspeed - GPS?

My 04 T5 is struggling with 26mpg at any speed, M-ways it goes upto around 27-28.

Chopping it in for a manual T5

Hi, just come back to Huddersfield from the Limousin region of France yesterday and according to the computer my S80 D5 2005MY averaged 48.5 going and 47mpg coming back, this was the with the cruise set at 80mph nearly all the way.
According to the sat nav my speedo is about 1-2mph fast at 80mph.
Im quite happy with that !!

Thankyou everyone for your replies. I really can't decide whether or not to make the change.
I am even considering a Saab, Audi, or VW estate as they seem to do better on an auto diesel, probably cos they have 1 less cylinder.

In the meantime if anyone else would like to leave any advice I will be checking back, I have heard that the previous shape V70 is better on mpg?

Any advice on that?

Thanks very much,
Jeff.

I've just managed to get 890 miles out of a full tank in my manual 2.5 tdi phase 2 v70. Previous mpg figures on full tanks are in the region of 44-49 though I do drive quite conservatively.

What was the route, weather conditions, and traffic level?

No particular route Jim, just a week driving all over the country with work. Pretty much all motorway, maybe 50 or 60 miles of it town driving, with mostly a steady 65mph on the motorways.
