Hi Tony,
I share your pain! I, too, have an XC90 with the D5244T. And like you, I have also been battling with ECM-6805. And it has only been four years . It has come to a point where I can pretty much anticipate when my driving style will trigger it (usually on moderate high engine load, say attempting to accelerate "a tad harder" from 20 mph to 30 mph going up any incline, rather than just nursing it; happens more likely on a cold engine, though it has also happened when the engine was at full operating temperature). I try to avoid the code being triggered and that means driving it ever so gently; entering roundabouts can get tricky though! It has made me wonder, since the beginning of my ownership, how an XC90 D5 163 should actually accelerate! I have never test driven another XC90 D5 163 (but would actually like to, just for comparison). I have, however, had an S80 D5 163 on loan (same engine as on my XC90) and that was nice and punchy, unlike my XC90. After much reading around here, I am inclined to think that the issue is more likely mechanical than electrical, though I am happy to be proven wrong. I am sure you have seen this diagram posted by Clan showing the various potential issues leading to ECM-6805 being triggered. I'm tempted to DIY an intercooler leak test as detailed here. But, realistically, the actual problem for my case, I think, is sticking VNT vanes. The video below is me applying vacuum directly to the turbo actuator, you might just make out the screeching noises.
The noise sounds very similar to the turbo posted by user fgx318 in his series of turbo repair videos; below is part 1.
Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks to Simmy and ca2n for your suggestions and videos. I have been suspicious of the intercooler hoses as they feel quite soft and easy to compress though there are no signs of leaks or oily deposits. I don't know how stiff a brand new one feels?! I haven't progessed the problem as for the last few months my son has been driving it as his car packed up. Unlike me, he's using it everyday often driving long distances and he's had no faults or recurrence of the error message.
Maybe it just needed using more and a bit of a thrashing!! I'll investigate your suggestions when I get it back. It was a "short-term loan" about 4 months ago! |
