HI i did a leak back test anhd 2 of the 5 cylinders filed the bottles almost to the top within 5 mins .. changed the 2 injectors and the car started perfectly .. took it on a 20 m ile run and the same happened again so did another leak back test and 4 of the injectors were perfect and number 5 was filling quickly so changed that one and all is good again .. didnt think one injector would cause the car not to start with 4 other good ones but it did so it must be very critical...i had checked the intank pump by undoing the fuel filter and turning ignition on and diesel seemed to be coming out ok not lots because its low pressure but there was life there

Don't know about D5 but the Isuzu 4HK and CUmmins engines will run with a naffed injector (not very well though) but not start on one. I understand that if an injector's stuck open (possibly due to small amount of contamination etc then it's countinuously dumping of common rail pressure that the high pressure pump is attempting to generate.

Hi, I have had the same problem with my s80 d5, 2003, 180000 miles,
Have fitted a new in tank pump which was needed, but then ended up only being able to start the car with easy start, did the test with the bottles and found that 4&5 injectors were filling the bottles far too fast.
Bought two second injectors from Volvo breakers for £80 (pair) and now the car starts as it should, hard to under stand why but that's how it is. Happy and thank you for the information, very helpful.

All five injectors are linked by the common rail. If one is leaking too fast the pump will not be able to deliver enough extra fuel to keep the pressure high enough for proper spray pattern and starting.
Think of five bouncy castles being supplied by a single pump. Put a big rip in one and all five lay down.
