have now removed the real panel on the back of the boot there is a wiring loom that runs from left to right .. right across the boot

Yes that grey plug looks like the one , if you have a test light you should find everything you need there , ie:
stop lamp
tail lights
Left and right indicators
Earth ( Thick Black )
Rear fog light
and a power supply ( red)
