Really glad and grateful for your perseverence there Gaztech.
I've checked out the link and will follow your description in a few minutes when I get out there again... Cheers

Found it!
Followed your directions, Gaztech, and there it was, the rubber hose you mentioned. Well done Sir. And here it is (see photo whitetubehose.jpg)... And here's the little pipe on top of the coolant pipe (littlepipe.jpg), showing where it snapped off into that hose. So, I need to find a new rubber hose, loosen the clip encircling both pipes, trim back the little pipe with some nifty hacksaw work, add the new hose, and re-attach the white tube so the cruise control works (?). Thought I'd postpone all that until I found out whether it'd start again, after 6 months diembowelled at the side of the road. It started almost instantly, and sounded perfect! Ha! Then after about 4 minutes it shuddered to a stop and wouldn't start again... No horrible noises, just died. Cranks on the starter ok, but no joy. I'm wondering whether there's something up with the fuel supply. So I guess I'll call out the auto-rescue service tomorrow (or Tuesday), see if they can locate the problem. Anyway, looks like my work was ok, and thanks to you chaps, the last bits of the jigsaw were found. Thank you.

Glad you got it sorted. The vacuum line is a reference for the fuel pressure regulator, so if this is not connected up then it won't be doing your fuel delivery any favours. I would find a way of connecting that up before you call anyone out to it. I'm not saying it will be the cause of the car stalling but I would look there first.

Excellent.
[Not the cruise control then!] If it's compromising the fuel pressure, I suppose that could be why the engine faltered and stopped. As you say, best to get that sorted first, and find out. So I will (optimism). So 'all I have to do' is get busy with the hacksaw, and find some of the correct diameter hose. Out with the micrometer then... Thank you, very much, once again.

Minor update: got replacement hose, just awaiting replacement spring clip (the original has rusted solidly onto the disintegrated old hose). Have disc cutter ready in handheld rotary tool so I can (hopefully) trim the corroded and broken end of the steel tube...
BTW, belatedly realised that Gaztech instantly identified that steel tube as connected to the "fuel pressure regulator", but since at the time I couldn't find it at all, I wasn't too focussed on where it went. Thanks for the patient repetition there, Gaztech!

Thanks (again) winsox.
As soon as that spring clip arrives I'll be back out there and I'll have another look. I renewed the pcv set-up, so I know where those hoses are!

So, got the clips, used the rotary tool and a really small disk-cutter to cut the end of that steel tube, attached the new silicon hose and... still didn't start.
Turns out, the last remaining hurdle to my V70 running was a duff ht (ignition) coil. Ordered one from my local Volvo dealer (Paul Rigby, Erdington - they've been really helpful) yesterday, picked it up and installed it today. Started immediately, and kept going. Sounds really fine.Just plucking up the nerve to take it for a quick local locked-down spin. Plus, no engine malfunction or service lights! I'll get round to that hose clip thing later. Probably when I have a go at replacing the top engine mount bush. That'll be fun.
