Fred ... the one on the ebay link will not fit a 740 VDO or Yazaki (I assume yours is a VDO) cluster ... in fact, it looks cable driven although I am no expert.

I think you will find it very difficult to find anyone competent and able to fix a broken spindle. It goes to the heart of the guage, ie the galvinometer to which the spindle is attached at its centre.

You cannot buy new ones in the UK now ... unless someone has one somewhere, which is doubtful. When last sold by Volvo they came in at about £250. You could ask 'Rufe' of FRF Motors, Swansea on this site.

Your best bet, as suggested by Tim, is to try and source a good used one with both a working speedo and odo. You should be able to get a used one for about £20 or so.

Also. as previously suggested put up a request under 'Wants' and keep your eyes peeled under 'Sales' for people breaking.

Best of luck, Bob.

I have the complete instrument cluster and shroud as taken from my pre-facelift 1987 740GLE 2.3 auto estate.
All gauges, including petrol, and speedo, tach were working when removed.
Showing mileage of 142368.
Need someone to remind me how to tell the difference between makers.
Mine has all 4 digits on tripcounter together.
May be of use to you if compatible,at extortionate price of course.

Just checked---
On trip counter there is a plastic divide between each mile/tenth so think the instrument cluster may be a Yazaki.

Yazaki clusters say 'Japan' on the back. They also have a raised white section on the fuel gauge side.

These are both Yazaki clusters but there are some differences.

Hi Mike. The speedo I need is the VDO, which I believe differs from the Yazaki in that the first three numbers on the tripmeter are in a single window, whereas in the Yazaki they're all in separate windows (like in the pic posed by Baggy797). If yours is a VDO I'd be interested to know what you mean by 'extortionate'

Cheers.

Oops, just read this post, I guess if its a Yazaki I can't use it. Thanks anyway.

Welcome aboard Fred - i too have a 1989 740 GLE and fairly new here as well as also having a speedo with dead odo/trip meters! Also had a dead fuel gauge until i made a replacement - wish i could do the same with the odo/trip meters!

Chased a few 740 instrument clusters on fleabay - all gone before i got near them though so obviously a common problem!

Hi Fred,

So yours is exactly like what my pictures show? A square cluster?

My local breakers has a G reg 740 in:

http://www.albertlooms.com/stock/volvo.htm

That will have a square cluster in it, I don't mind checking if its a VDO/Yazaki type and getting it for you (the whole cluster or just the speedo unit), next time I go there if you like.

Thanks for the offer Baggy, I really appreciate it. The one I'm after is similar to the one in the pic except I think that one is a Yazaki and I need a VDO. Also, mine doesn't have the additional guages at the sides (oil pressure?). I'll attach a couple of pics of mine for info.

I did get a quote for a reconditioned speedo but they wanted £150 for it, which I thought was a bit excessive.

Fred
