@Luxobarge
Thanks for clarifying ; just read the 'EOBD Engine Fault Code Reader for all 2001+ petrol and 2004+ diesel cars (GCR05)' in description and thought it might not work

Tetley, I know you've not had this car long - did you have the light when you bought it and you're just trying to clear the light?

If so, just disconnect ground connector on battery for 24 hours. Should clear the code there for you - then see if anything comes back.

Cheers Pat.
I got very little paperwork with the car, so consequently no code for the radio/cd/tape, so disconnecting the battery isn't an option, unless I really, really have to.
Yes mate, the light was on when I got the car, but very cleverly disguised by a small piece of black tape. I didn't see it. Shame on me.

Thanks Dannyboy.
I think I'll just wait and get one of those cheapy ones.
As long as it does the job once, I'll be happy.

Thanks for the offer kevinbis. Much appreciated.

Went round to a work colleagues house this morning after work - about 6am.
His son, who finished work at the same time, plugged his code reader in for me with a laptop, and it brought up code PO172, fuel trim too rich.
Did a bit of research when I got home, and it seems like the most likely suspect is the vacuum pipe elbow on the inlet under the power steering gubbins. Will be taking a look at that over the weekend.
The light is out for now though.
Thanks for the replies people.
