It is entirely possible for a dragging clutch to make it impossible to change gears. A dragging clutch can be caused by worn or defective fingers (or diaphragm) which fails to release the sliding (clutch) plate from the driven plate. The problem can also be caused by a dragging sliding (clutch) plate caused by worn splines.

Hello, Iain!
Thank you for your comment! Dragging clutch, as far as I understand is the situation, when the clutch disk does not disconnect from the flywheel, which I suspect exactly what happened with my car. Cite from the website here "When a transmission blocks you from a gear, you are experiencing what we call ‘clutch drag’. This means the clutch is not letting go of the disk fully and dragging on the assembly." It can cause the worn excessively clutch, yes, sure. What they are saying is that worn clutch disk was the only (!) reason for my problem. Again, you are calling several possible root causes (worn or defective fingers, worn splines). I totally agree, that there are several possible root causes of the problems, but all of them should lead to inability of the clutch to disconnect the engine from the gearbox, or "dragging clutch". But I can't think of the technical explanation of how worn clutch disk alone (this is the key word) can cause it... Worn clutch disk can prevent you from connecting the engine and gearbox, not prevent you from disconnecting them. |

I think that most mechanics these days - they aren't really mechanics as I would describe a mechanic, more swap out monkeys, would define anything that is wrong with the clutch plate as a worn clutch plate.
It is not unreasonable to say that fingers that have lost the rigidity or a spine that is outside tolerance as being worn and the are both part of the clutch mechanism, with the spines being part of the disc. In the past I have heard worn clutch used to refer to any, and all, parts of the clutch assembly.

Iain, you have seen the pictures (above in the thread)... Can you call this clutch disk actually completely worn? No, they were specifically referred to the worn clutch disk as worn friction surface.
I agree with you about mechanics... My bigger concern is that their lack of knowledge (or maybe intentional negligence or fraud, I do not know) currently costed me £1142 and they now do not want even to send it for warranty expertise to the warranty department of Volvo... That is why I am trying to get the idea whether my clutch disk was worn that badly and even if it was, how it could contribute to specific problem I had? I would love to pay for expertise, but preferably somewhere locally and then file a complaint first to the Volvo head office and if it will not work, then to court. Thank you very much in advance. Best regards. |

I am no mechanic!
We had an issue same as yours on s60 d2 62 reg and the garage found the 'pressure plate forks seemed uneven albeit with no real damage'. The clutch was replaced along with the above work and all was well. Hope this helps? Regards |

Hi!
I would suspect the same problem... The point is if it would be unevenness (or any other problem) of pressure plate fork, it would be a warranty issue, whereas in my case they are saying that it is clutch plate wear and it is not covered by warranty and I had to pay £1100 for change of the clutch although the car is still under warranty... That is what I really do not like about it. I am trying to make them to send the old clutch for testing to Volvo Warranty Department, but now they reject to send the warranty claim. |
