My car at present is an 02 Phase 2 2.4T AWD petrol, and this is why I will consider the D5, not because of my annual mileage, but better economy than my petrol.

My current one is the one I like the best, for several reasons; All The Toys on it, The Power (Twin Turbo 215bhp), Drives on the Road the Best (more like my old MkII Mondeo), The MPG is as good as the Phase 2 XC70's and IMHO it looks the Best...Thou the first one I had more fun in, bit of light off road stuff, the snow etc. but I think that was more to do with it being my first AWD car and first XC, so I played with it more....the second I liked because of the extra standard toys, hated the third one because of the lack of 4C....but I like this best, however I wouldn't take it off road etc because it feels more car like rather than a slightly tougher off roader like the phase 2.

As for the reason for changing often, I used to get some really good deals so good I changed them every 6 months, but with the phase 3 and the economy the deals have almost dried up, so isn't worth changing as often, so now keeping them 2yrs+. All my cars have been either Ex. Demo's, Pre Reg or New; it depended on the deal and what they had in stock at the time. A lot of the time it was what they had in their showroom or within their dealership group, which I could get a deal on, so they were new cars unregistered. There were some (like the last 2) that were full new factory order cars, so a bit of a mix and if I knew I was only keeping them for 6 months it was the deal that counted, but now I'm keeping them longer & buying new I order what I want.

I have just got an 07 XC70 D5 185 with plenty of toys but no 4C suspension, and to be honest, it is a little jiggly but perfectly acceptable and not really any different to my old V70 D5. It doesnt lean appreciably around bends, although I dont tend to drive too hard.

For me, there is enough complexity under the thing as it is, and as I have to foot the bill it if goes wrong, the less to go wrong the better.

The main difference between yourself and me, will be that I will be buying at youngest, a 5 year old car. Any problems with the 4C will be down to me having to pay for it all, whereas for you, your cars are covered by warranty, so no maintenance issue or money issue.

Would you still have this option fitted if you had to buy a 5 year old, or older car??

YES....I won't have a XC70 without it now, but if buying an older car (like I said early) make sure it has a full (dealer) service history and comes with a good warranty that includes 4C, AWD, Geartronic Box etc. because its expensive to fix.

What is your annual mileage? If it's below 10k, I'd look at another 2.4T. There won't be an enormous void, and the diesels can be expensive to fix.

4C is nice, but too expensive for my application (high mileage, low cost). I'd probably have it in a car I used more for fun.

cheers

James

Default C4 or not to C4

My advice is to test drive an XC70 without C4 & if your comfortable with the driving experience then don't buy one with C4. I've had an MOT advisory of the last 3 years for 'a light misting of oil' on the same shock absorber (quoted £647 to replace). In addition to this, a failed bodywork acceleration sensor (sum sensor) which cost £231 to replace the keep the C4 system working.

In summary, nice toy but not worth the bother....

Yeh, go to the stealer and test drive an SE and then a LUX. Do it over the same roads and make sure they're bendy, high speed and bumpy if you can.
You also need to do a good few miles, not the usual 5 or so the dealer would like, you really need 30 or so to get a feel for the car.

Bearing in mind the cost and complexity, if I was buying a 55 plate I'd make sure it had a good history of service. For me a main stealer record isn't as important as regular servicing done to the schedule and not missing or late.
What I wouldn't do is buy one without 4C
