EXACTLY Even if proven it was not your fault, the insurance companies still treat you as a risk.

CYA indeed 😁

I think you'd need to report it to cover your derriere sadly.

Re the damage, check the front edges of the rear bumper, where they sit over/around the wheel arches - if those edges don't line up then something has bent/broken where the bumper is mounted. IIRC there are delicate plastic slides that the bumper fits into - those are very brittle. The hefty cross beam should be fine, but where it mounts onto the metal brackets frequently corrodes so will highly likely be damaged. You'll be able to repair it as I believe new metal brackets are still available?

Whatever you do, you should get under the rear of the vehicle to give it a quick check over. These are indeed tanks, but they're old now and corrosion will weaken some parts a bit.

Good luck

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve had a more thorough look today. The metal appears to be pretty straight except for a very slight bending of the brackets that hold the bumper on. However, the sides don’t look quite right and one of the flimsy plastic brackets has snapped away where it attaches on two plastic prongs. The decorative outer part of the tailpipe seems to have been pushed off centre too!

It’s looking a bit more complicated than just a straightforward paint job. The other party, who do seem genuine, are having their car assessed on Monday. I’m starting to think going through insurance might be the simplest option.

If the other party is having their vehicle assessed on Monday, sounds like they are going through their insurance. That being the case, if they are at fault (difficult not to be, as they hit you from behind) their insurance will take care of you so no worries.

They are having it looked at privately by a garage. I think they’ll then make a decision about whether they claim for damage to their own vehicle. In fairness they don’t seem bothered about whether I go through insurance or not. They do seem genuinely nice people. My concerns are gettIng a decent repair done and not having my car written off.

If they're having their car assessed, they're almost certainly going through insurance so i'd definitely report this one and get your car repaired - there looks to be a lot of incidental damage there that may be nothing or could be something to worry about.
Get it fixed at their cost!
