Sorry to hear the bad news. A major problem with D5 engines is the auxillary belt idler. This is something that gets overlooked by many. It starts mKing a noise to begin with, but seizes and strips the aux belt and destroys everything! My friend is a technician at volvo and see this problem on a regular basis.
I hope they can sort your car out and get you back on the road!!

Is the D3 [163] also affected?
Hi,
I have a 2011MY D3 [163] with 95k on the clock. I've noticed a groaning that varies with engine speed (louder at certain revs, sounds like power steering when the fluid is low) when the A/C is on. I thought it was the compressor (or compressor clutch) but now I'm worried about shredding belts! Should I bring the car in to be checked? It supposedly has a full Volvo service history (so any recalls should be done), but the service book was apparently stolen. csd |

The belt, tensioner, idler and the other pulleys will need checking. You may have service history but some of those parts may not have been due to be looked at previously and you're at a prime mileage for certain parts to be near the end of their service life.

Hi all, so, i got the car back on Wednesday 30th April , with all the repairs done, but i had to pay for the repair and claim it back from the warranty company, car care through black-horse, and i am still awaiting the payment of £4600 , it may take a while longer because of yet another bank holiday, so from Wednesday 16th of April until Wednesday 30th April ,without the car was a bit stressful to say the least and i am still out of pocket. The car seems o.k. so we will see.
As the garage that did it is an Independent Volvo garage, i am unsure weather to get the car serviced by Volvo now ,just to get all checked and updates checked. I know this is silly ,and i am a maintenance engineer,so i should know better, but i am just so peed of with the car , i may change it for the 2 litre diesel, which i had in the V 50 before the V 70. |

Hi, glad you've got your car back.
Can you enlighten us with some more information about your car? Age, mileage, service history? Do you know if the aux belt tensioner was replaced under recall? (Your local Volvo dealer should be able to check for you.) Knowing this info will help us. |

Hi, well i am now really ****ed off, the replacement tensioner has an exposed coil spring! i have only just read back through the whole thread, ( i do not have a computer at home, long story, no land line and no sky t.v. , so i only get to use the internet at work) so i have just checked the thing and it is a large exposed coil spring, so where do i go from here, this thing is getting to be a pain in the butt.
The car is 09 plate 64000 miles, indipendant service history, bought from Blackhorse in november. Local volvo dealer has no history of the car, and were unhelpful in every way when i called about the problem before going to Heritage motors. Last edited by silvermachine; May 7th, 2014 at 10:30. |

Oh joy, i now have a dash warning saying engine system requires service and the orange warning triangle lights up, i am hoping this is just to much oil, but the way things are going i will nit be holding my breath.

It does seem like it may just be an over fill of oil. There does seem to be a common pattern here - Independent does the servicing, and it looks like the not only has the Aux belt been changed at the correct interval, but also the recall for the tensioner was missed. You then go to a different place for the engine rebuild and they fill the oil level incorrectly.
Main dealers are expensive but unless you have a reliable Volvo specialist who is familiar with these cars, they do seem to be the only choice! |

I looked at a V70 D5 '57 plate. And it had a squeal type noise coming from the aux belt area and the gentlemen, spray something on it (didn't catch the name). Didn't quite disappear. What do you think the noise could of been? Need for a new belt / tensioner?
