Or some American iron? A chevy small block will easily do 300bhp and good torque from tick-over, or the LS2 has genuine 400bhp and 400lbft out of the box. Either will keep going for 200k miles!
A well troden path in the states http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Volvo_200_V-8.html (The intro's worth a read... the end bit is funny) John Last edited by john h; Jul 31st, 2009 at 18:32. |

Iron .. exacttly ! how much does one of these big iron American V8's weigh? youd need 3 of those cylinders just to move the engine and gearbox :-)
The Volvo V8 is all Alloy and LOVES to rev to 6000 and beyond unlike the yank iron ..

Not sure what the Volvo V8 weighs, but the LS2 is 205kg including all ancillaries. Whilst you wouldn't want to drop it on your foot, that's OK for a reliable 400bhp motor. Fuel shut off is at 6,600rpm. This is an advanced engine. Although the OHV design seems old-tech, it saves a load of cylinder head weight in a V8, and helps make it compact (same size as a Rover 3.5 V8). http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache...&ct=clnk&gl=uk The Tremec (formerly BW) 5-speed manual box bolts up to the LS2. I don't know what they weigh but I had one in my Scimitar V8 and, moving it around, it felt "normal" gearbox weight... not excessive. I guess the 6 speed will weighs a bit more, but maybe 5 gears is enough with 400 lb ft? They are strong (they usually only break when north of 600 lb ft). Is there a manual box available for the Volvo V8? If so, it would also need to be pretty substantial I suppose. John Last edited by john h; Jul 31st, 2009 at 19:06. |

No manual box for the V8 which will bolt on, but like most engine conversions you could use an adapter plate to suit your manual box .
The Volvo V8 is a 60 degree 32 valve one so very narrow and is 4400 cc 315 bhp( @ 6000 rpm ) and 440 nm torque, it is the cleanest V8 in the world and has variable cam timing and variable valve lift and variable inlet tracts . The full installed weight is 190kg ... Just 10kg more than the D5 !!

I think it i best to stick with Volvo engines, either a redblock turbo or whiteblock turbo. That way in the long run it will still be cheaper to maintain than a BMW M60/62 OR Merc M117 . If you use the redblock most bits bolt on easily and you can use you finances to upgrade the engine rather than fabricating mounts and such.

My personal perspective; if its just a matter of making a quick 240... decent power needed vs £ spent, I think I'd agree... a tuned turbo redblock or a T5 (in that order).
If a V8 is what's wanted, if I could find a 4.0+ BMW V8 & manual box with under 80k miles and a good history for, say, £1000 that would be good. If not I'd plump for a new 400 bhp chevy & tremec (£2.5k last time I checked... before the £ crashed admittedly!). In fact, if my supercharged B30 has the nerve to blow up, that's exactly what will be end up in the 164! But having said that, what does the Volvo V8 cost? It would be really nice to keep it in the family (if there's a manual box solution that works) but I don't think I've seen any advertised. John |

ok, i must admit i'm lost, Volvo v8, are talking boat engine Pentas?? I remember few years ago there was a glut of things running them as they seemed to be making 300 quid a pair. now i've never seen them. Look at the pics, i think its got to go v8 for sound alone, it looks even better in the flesh! i hauled it back last night, need to play around with back end first before i send some updated pics!
on that note if anyone in dorset wants to down few beers with obligatory fiberglass dust your more than welcome! |
