Ive read some people have done the change without removing the damper, but i imagine great care installing new belt with such a tight squeeze & any bending. Is is new damper bolts & nut if I decide to take it off?
Mine isnt due for another 15-20k, but ive only had car 3 weeks & not knowing how the car was driven b4, I always like to change all belts & associates regardless of service, just for piece of mind. I suppose a water pump would be wise also as Ive not come accross a water pump on the service history?

you only need to take the crank pulley off on the D5 the petrol engine belt is not so wide so easier to wangle off around the pulley .
No you wont need a water pump , just spin it and as long as it is smooth to turn and no white dried coolant stains it will be fine . Never known one actualy fail since it came out in the 960 in 1990 .

Here is an excellent video showing how to replace a Volvo timing belt.

My water pump failed Clan! I'd only had the car a few weeks.
Fixed now, limbering up my legal muscles.

I removed the crank pulley as wangling the belt through the gap looked tight to me (guess you have to know the technique). Getting the new one back on without damaging it was the worry. As the tools were handy it wasn't a big deal. (Righty Tighty Lefty Loosey).

However. I had reason to remove the plastic backplate for the timing belt cover and found that the bottom section (around the crank pulley) came off separately. So I guess that would have made getting the belt on and off much easier.

Yes indeed , that crescent shaped guard plate would make it very possible :-) Unlucky with that water pump , maybe it wasnt volvo original?

Yes it was unlucky. Much of my buying decision was around Volvo's reputation for reliability etc. Hey Ho! we live and learn.

The pump has 'Volvo' cast into the casing so I guess its an original (130k). So is the replacement!

There was evidence of leaking around the pump and the coolant was just water so it gave lots of warning before it went. I just timed my purchase badly.

I picked up from another thread that the quality of the coolant had something to do with the longevity of the pump bearing!! Anything in that?

well the coolant doesnt get near the bearing due to the seal ... if the seal goes water would get into the bearing and flush the grease out . Glad it is all sorted !
