Many years ago the daughters fiat got rear ended so a no fault claim, bent tailgate, cracked bumper and tailgate wouldn't shut. Insurance write off as uneconomical repair.
Insurance offer was a joke so pushed back quoting values from auto trader, this worked and paid out a much better offer. We then purchased the car back for £300 (car value and payout was £2300), obtained a used tailgate and bumper and a big hammer to realigned the lock and it was back on the road. We had to take it to a test centre to confirm vehicle identity (not the actual repair!) Daughter put the remaining £1500 in an ISA. |

It's not even necessary to take it to a test centre now.
The car will just be flagged as Category N or S write off, but in reality that doesn't affect insuring or driving it at all - it just reduces it value. There's a whole industry of small garages (including a few who document everything they do on Youtube) that buy these lightly damaged cars and repair them as new for relatively little. The issue with insurance is that they only use new parts and they have to factor in the cost of hire cars etc - whereas once bought as salvage then used parts are used which keeps the cost down. A 5 year old car has 5 year old doors before the crash so is fine with different 5 year old doors afterwards after all.

Quick update on my V90,
Repairs authorised, so it lives on. Two doors, blend into front, paint and blend rear quarter and bumper, refurb rear alloy wheel and replace tyre. its going to take a few weeks before it comes back though.

A final update on my V90,
I received the car back from the bodyshop this morning, and the repair is fantastic, almost to good compared to the undamaged side. Attached are a couple of pictures of the repaired side.

I bought a XC90 last november and my partner got into difficulties trying to reverse down the drive in snow, to cut a long story short the n/s rear wing was grazed and the back light needed replacing. I have never had a claim in over 40 years so i thought why not. My insurance company picked it up and within the hour had assesed the damage and told me when it would be ready. I asked how much it would be costing and they said £4000. I couldn't believe it for a scrape and a back light. I have protected no claims but their new quote earlier this month was double what i paid them last year. The garage that carried out the repairs was owned by the insurers too.
