Just had both rear bearings done under warranty on my 2011 XC90 with just 25,000 miles on the clock......interestingly, Volvo Sweden have added and extra two years warranty on this specific part over and above the normal 2 years on the rest of the car......
Symptoms were the same, sounded like noise from the front, but it was actually the rear bearings.....

Never forget that a droaning noise could very well be caused by uneven tyres. It is quite easy to check by just swapping the front and rear wheels and see if the noise moves from front to back or vv.

wheel bearings
I have a 2009 xc90 [38k miles]with a groaning/moaning sound and took it to volvo 2 weeks before the warranty expired, they kept it for 2 days and said it was some loose heat shields ???. I too have grabbers fitted and they said the noise was from the tyres, i argued that this was not true as the sound had started before i fitted the tyres. I took it back to volvo just before the warranty date with the same conclusion- this time they actually had it for 4 days, even though i told them i suspected a wheel bearing.the result was the same ie[ no bearing fault], just tyre noise. Thanks to posts on xc90 wheel bearing forums i tried cornering at higher speeds and noticed the groaning ceased when i went left but stayed the same when i went right, indicating a left bearing issue, because as i cornered left at approx 40mph the noise went away but returned when back straight.I took it back 3 days ago [warranty has now expired] and wonder of wonders they told me late last night, tests had revealed a failed rear nearside wheel bearing, which they are replacing today, but volvo have offered to pay only 90% of the cost leaving me with a £37 bill...charming'. trouble is i need the car urgently for a trip tomorrow and cannot afford a fight over £37...hope this helps

Droaning noise
Mine produced a droaning noise this weekend but by Monday it had gone again - seemed to coincide with the mother-in-law going back home.

Was that more a 'moaning' noise rather than 'droaning'? I seem to get that all the time....
