Our 2010 Active manual had the upgrade completed recently and its definitely more tractable and mpg seems to be up from 31/32 to 34/35. Car now has nearly 6000 miles on it and we are very pleased with it.

i have just been chatting with a volvo mechanic earlier, and he reckons that it is near-on impossible to find an upgrade on an ecu.

he wasn't trying to sell me anything as we were chatting about performance upgrades.

does anyone else know if this is the case?

Would you notice it with the RICA update on a 163 model?

I'm thinking of this - for towing of course.

Thanks Clan. This is what I suspect. I wonder how many drivers would really notice 20 hp on a 185hp / 2 tons car. Would be an interesting study. Take 20 drivers, upgrade 50%, leave 50% as it is. Tell all of them they have 200 hp... and see feedback.

Anyway, the manufacturers have been looking for another metal paint con for a while...

so here it is, you can buy the car ... but need £650 to have full engine power.

Its obvious that someone who has been driving for 33 years, has owned vehicles ranging from a Lada Riva 1500 estate to a WRX Imprezza, can't be trusted to tell there is a noticeable torque and economy difference. maybe the answer is to actually have driven 'before and after' not just theorise.

I have ordered a xc90 exec primarily to pull a 1400kg caravan in a way that my ageing c8 cannot ie across wet grass at campsites, up hills 0n "campsites" like glastonbury etc. This is about as off road as Im going to get.
The harrats price for this 20bhp upgrade is £550 and I suspect this can be improved upon.
Seeing as I paid an obscene amount to increase the power of my mini by 40bhp, this does not seem that much especially when you consider the increase in price BMW charge to tune the same engine in their cars ie 116, 118, 120, 123d are all the same engine with a different turbo on them.
Whilst direct line turned up their noses at the upgrade, Volvo insurance disregard it and quoted me £300 less.
So no change in insurance, no effect on warranty, more power, more torque, what's there not to like?

Ps Insurance companies take a keen interest in the ecu's of cars Involved in speed related accidents as do car companies whn assessing claims for gear box repairs etc. A non declared mod may be very expensive and voids the insurance.

Its worth taking a look at the Rica website as their re-maps offer serious performance increases, the benefit here is that if you use their softloader unit ( extra £99 ) then you can remove the map whenever you need to ie. servicing and warranty claims and then put the map back on when you wish.

Please don`t be fooled into believing that the re-map will be undetectable, any dealer or specialist will be able to instantly access via diagnostics and see that your car has been modified, I would always declare it to my insurance company too for piece of mind
