Every mainstream manufacturer will soon be copying Volvo with the 4 cylinder unit. Mark my words.

I am not so sure. Interestingly enough, Audi A6 3.0 achieves very near official mpg to their 2.0 litres ( in same configuration front wheel or Quattro)

Real life mpg is near identical

Small engine has been favoured by eu stupid test because acceleration is not slow so small engine can do it unstressed. In real life, this small engine are overworked and does not achieve great results.

Once real test I put in place, the incentive to downsize will not be a strNot

Time will tell but as technology improves, it will inevitably lead to better output from smaller engines. That coupled with tightening EU emission standards, will result in 3 or 4 cylinder units becoming the norm. In my view, Volvo are simply ahead of the game.

Sadly, or 6 and 8 clyinder models will only feature in top flagship models.

5 cylinders seems a good compromise. Much less NVH than a 4 and still more economical compared to a 6.

I wish the EU would go away and let us drive nice over engined smooth cars and fuel them cheaply.

Its not the output. In a world of 70mph speed limits, busy roads, bad weather outputs of 250bhp are more than ample. However refinement and smoothness cannot and never will be delivered by diesel engines with 4 cylinders or less. 5 is a fair bit smoother, 6, 8,10 and 12's are better still.

Petrol 4pots are tolerable smooth until higher rpms, but really 5-12 clyinders is whats needed.

And 3 cylinder engines seem to be making an impression. BMW's new 1.5 litre has been winning plaudits for smoothness and is no slouch. Must be to do with the different firing order from an odd number of cylinders. There are loads of smaller triples, like PSA's 1.2 litre Puretech and the Ford Ecoboost, which have also made a good impression. So, whilst 4 cylinder/2 litre engines are making the running right now, the bulk of needs can be met with 3 cylinder / 1.5 litre engines.

But how does one define "refinement and smoothness?

Back in the day, some considered the volvo 244D quite "smooth". By the late 80s it sounded like a tractor.

Engine management systems will continue to evolve and improve and the "refinement and smoothness( however one defines that) will get better and better from small cylinder engines.

If I had said to you that mobile phones would have quad core processors 15 years ago, you would have said "not in my life time!

Volvo have got is absolutely right.Sit back and watch how everyone else imitates them in the next 3-5 years.
