A manual, at least, fully depressurises the intake during gearshifts, but once the engine is spinning fast enough to spool the turbo, it repressurises very quickly.

As for getting off the line...much of the older stuff isn't powerful enough (relative to its weight), and while the newer (non-AWD) stuff (although heavier) has more power, it doesn't have the traction. I think AWD drivers are too worried about bending something! Get 300+bhp and good traction, and a brick can get to 60 pretty quickly. I'd say Ryan's 740 is probably in the 5-second range on a dry road.

cheers

James

You need to speed up on your gear changes then lol! (Just kidding really - I know how slow the manual box is)

My lazy man's gearbox only lets it drop about 2-3 psi during gear changes before its off again at 10psi. It certainly doesn't fully depressurise

Agreed. You can certainly make them quicker 0-60 but getting there costs a lot! Trouble is people think that a remap on its own will get their car to go quicker - they forget about the traction problems with the fwd volvos and adding more power merely exacerbates the issue.

cheers

James

See above in bold.

The Scoob will to particularly well to 60 compared with a Volvo because they have short gearing...and the small matter of 4wd!

cheers

Deep in the recesses of what passes for a brain, I remember some toy to keep the turbo spinning so you can shift with no drop off in boost, it also helped spool up from tickover.

Seem to think it was a Saab spinoff from the old rally programme.

Ring a bell with anyone?

Cheers,

T

Anti-lag? Not really suitable for road use because of the effect it has on turbo lifespan...and potentially noise concerns!

cheers

Honestly can't remember, James. I have a stack of old Saab books, so it's probably in there - somewhere. I'll go delving later in the week see what I can find.

Cheers,

T

They might not call it that...but the system works by messing with the ignition timing (and potentially cutting it completely) such that fuel passes through the engine and ignites in the hot manifold / turbo turbine housing, keeping the turbo spooled. You can probably see how it's not good for the manifold and turbo, though! Not a problem on a race car (especially a works race car...), but not wonderful for a normal road car.

cheers

James

I see you can change the 70 series cars to a short throw gear change, has anyone tried this ?

Just going back to my first comment I do not get that 'pushed back in your seat' power I did from my 850 T5 which felt very quick off the mark .. The C70 gets there but without any drama until 2500 rpm plus ....
