This is just awful... Do I really have to scrap a car I have had for 12 years just because of a dumb down pipe? All the ebay ones are the wrong type.

My only option, it seems, is to get a new complete Jetex system, but I just spent £200 for a new exhaust from Volvo which has only been on the car for 6 months... Also, I've had Jetex before and they're not very good.

Hey Morsing,

Sorry, thought Fyfes was national, looks like they are only over here. Give the Bangor branch a ring, they are well decent guys. I am sure they would send you one or tell you the parts people they are using. Don't scrap that tank!

There is a guy on here fabricates stainless pipes as well, worth a chat?

Linky...

Cheers,

Go into any exhaust branch and get the catalogue number , or try Volvo for the correct part number. I do kno tho that bosal and walker will make it differently because they made them to repair the Volvo system rather than replace the whole downpipe.

I will ask my dad to have a look for one in his used parts store. He only runs stainless now so will not be using any standard ones

Default Down pipe B200/230E 1989 CI injection

I had a high mileage gearbox 500k + mls and the final flange bearing was the problem due to viabration.

I have replaced the gear box s/h for £120 and after GES (Volvo club) G for life replacements, two Volvo systems, a local bespoke and extra reinforcements and welding over 18 months, the rear flange has finally sorted this problem.

A small leak of oil is a clue. The only way to be certainl and confirm the problem is to remove the rubber bearing attached to the flange and waggle it up and down. I could hardly believe the amount of play.

If you can drive the 240, put your hand on the gear knob and access the viabration at say 60/70 mph. There should be next none.

So,

Finally got a new cheap downpipe (not impressed I must say), but when I got the old one out, I noticed what looks like blowing between the gasket and downpipe (gasket has been turned over):

Can anyone confirm that this is the cause of the blowing? I can't find any visible problems with the old downpipe, which is a genuine Volvo one and only 7-8 years old, even though I thought I felt something from the join between where the two pipes become one when it was previously running.

It the gasket looks like leaking, I will put the proper Volvo pipe back on. Thanks for any advice.

Ok, but do you think by looking at that gasket, that that would cause an audible leak at idle and smell in the car going up-hill?

You would hear it and as it is at the front the more likely you are to get an exhaust smell. The down pipe will normally last 2 systems
