I always stayed with the Volvo load ratings as I had seen posts in various forums that XL led to a harsher ride. The XC70 had 235/55/17 and was a quite compliant ride that absorbed the worst that UK roads could throw at her, whilst still handling well too.

18k is about what I got from Pirelli Assimetricos but I tend to be pretty gentle on acceleration and braking. What do you use in winter if not the V70?

I cycle to work year round and if the weather in the winter is really bad I run to work. Our knockabout car is the wife's Honda Civic.

In North America XC owners run Nokian tyres which are rated winter but run them all year. They regularly get 30K miles + (and their roads are a lot rougher being loose gravel tracks off the highway. They run 235x60xR16 rather than the standard 215x65xR16 which do not affect speedo and give excellent dry and wet handling and then again, short of a studied tyre, they are the best on snow. They are said to be quieter than the Perrelli Scorpion STRs and they are more fuel efficient being rated C for fuel and wet, scorpions are E/F and C. Do not compromise on load ratings, lower load rated tyres have side walls that do not perform to the OE speck.
I am getting Nokian WR SUV G3.
