I can only imagine that the Sat Nav is relying on the current Traffic Management information. When it happens to me, on the journey anticlockwise from the M40 towards the Chobham turn off at J11, it sometimes takes me off the M25 for one junction. Once it took me off for 2 junctions, then back on again.

I have it set up to avoid traffic but to use Motorways and Fast rather than Short.

OK but this would have been off and on again at the same junction. I ignored it as the traffic was heavy but flowing freely. I do not do the journey very often these days, so it's not a problem, just a matter of interest. I'll try it again next time I'm down.

Thanks for your input.

It woudl appear that the XC60 satnav has the bad driving techniques used around the M25 planned into its system

There are quite a few junctions where people nip off the M25, drive through the junction and rejoin a several hundred yards down the road, A30/M25 at Staines is a favourite for this - not that I would consider doing this

Perish the thought! I bet they force their way back on from the slip road as well

Not me on this junction as I stay on the slip road until the next junction (14) where I leave the M25, using the back road into LHR

But that is not say BMW and Audi drivers don't do as you suggest

I'm sure its technically illegal to do that.

If its slow going get off at jct 13 onto the A30 then left at the crooked billet pub roundabout and nip up between the reservoirs to get to Heathrow!

the sat nav directed me to do this once in v. heavy traffic. i'm interested to know how it is technically illiegal. we're talking about the same thing right? completely leaving the motorway, going straight over at the roundabout and rejoining the same motorway.

Many years ago I was on a National express coach when the driver did just such a manoeuvre . Some interfering prat sent a message to the driver via the stewardess that he was breaking the law , which made me chuckle. But I do seem to remember looking it up and thinking, blimey he was right.

I shall try and find my highway code book tomorrow

edit: no, I can't find any reference to it, maybe it's removed or its my memory playing tricks

There are many things that are clearly unlawful that drivers do and I can't see this as being one of them - better that people remember when to switch their lights of and on correctly (and other things) than worry about someone using the carriageways legally

Thanks for the crooked billet tip, might prove useful
