If you are running about on electricity, presumably the engine is 'cold'. Put your foot down and it kicks in, on full power, from cold. Not something anybody would recommend.

So does a hybrid engine suffer from excessive wear due to a relatively high number of full power 'cold starts'?
Good point. I'm not sure whether it's problem. When I used it the other day I drove about 22 miles in Hybrid mode and the engine from what I could tell turned on about 5 times for maybe 20 seconds at a time. Usually if you accelerate too fast.

You would think that's something that Volvo has considered. Maybe the engine isn't actually cold if the car is running even if it's in battery mode...

I've tried to find out about this, I'm pretty sure as long as your in hybrid mode the battery and engine cooling system are linked so the engine is warmed, in pure mode i believe the engine functionality is minimal so no pre heating of the engine.

If you electrically pre heat it doesn't seem to heat up the engine, but if you preheat using fuel to seems to, its not scientific but I've noticed the engine feels smoother when you've pre heated, and if you've done a few miles in hybrid mode over jamming the accelerator on when cold.

Someone who knows more about these things will be able to confirm if I've just made it all up or not mind! Can find lots of stuff on the motor side of the car but can find little clear information about the way the cooling systems work.

I feel based on what i believe to be happening there is actually less wear due to limited actual cold engine starts to a conventional diesel...I'm hoping clan will know and educate us to what actually happens

Maybe that means that starting from cold doesn't really matter anymore... or maybe they're pulling one over us hehe.

Doesn't one of the active dash themes show temps?

Ah very interesting, it'll be good to find out more about that. Where do you service your car? Any recommendations of specialist plug in dealers/garages out there?

My question was more in line to compare mileage in the clock... you know, one of the things one should look when buying a used car is the amount of miles it has. So the more mileage, the less value a car has. Now I think that when comparing a PHEV, the real mileage in the combustion engine of the PHEV car would be lower than what it said in the clock, right (Because some miles are done on pure electric). I think Green Van Man "kind of" clear some other question I also had about the maintenance. In a regular car the drive belt and water pump should be replaced at around 60K miles so if in a PHEV this could be held longer (say 100K miles) this could be an indication of what is the relative mileage comparative?
Again thank you for your comments
Hello - yes you can check this. I have plugged mine into an OBC2 reader and it tells me the milage on the ICE - last time I checked for mine with c.90k km up on the odometer approx. 28% was EV and the remainder ICE.

I wonder about engine duty cycle too, as you have it cutting in & out a lot.

You have to be in the particular Forum Subdirectory where the "New Thread" button can be found in the upper left hand corner. You won't see it if you're reading a thread, you need to go up one level.
