Wow, fantastic work & good timing on your part probably! Looking forward to seeing the finished results.

I don't think mine is anything like yours in terms of tin-worm, but I reckon it's only a few years before I'll have to seriously look & make a decision such as you have done.

Hats off to you

Quite surprised how much rust there was under the surface with the inner wheel arch seams. Can you buy repair panels for most of these areas? It's coming on well and looking forward to seeing the repairs in progress. Glad that you are sorting the rust as I like the 240 saloons.

Just seen your other page of pictures after posting. Looks great now! The repair panels, where are they purchased from? Looks superb!!

James

Thanks folks.

Have had the car back now for 3 weeks but have been working away, on hols and now it it sat under about a foot of snow!!

Waiting for it to thaw out so I can give it a good wax / polish (something I've not bothered to do for about 10 years) and will take some photos of the final results.

Repair panels were available for outer arch but the rest was fabricated - all repairs done in metal.

The car is not perfect - this was not a total restoration - it lives outdoors too. There are other little bits that will need attending over the next few years but it is looking a whole lot better and more importantly is generally solid again. I wish I had the space / skills / time to work on these things myself as some forum members do but sadly I don't at the moment.

The cost was a whole lot less than you might think - will PM interested people, can also PM contact details of the people that did the work. If you have anything like this that needs doing and are within a couple of hours of Manchester I would seriously advise going to see these guys for a cup of tea and a quote. They actually genuinely enjoy working on older vehicles too - no matter what the age / value etc.

Mmm, very nice job.

Great that you choose to get the work done properly because of the sentimental value - I like that.

Next thing you need to go - before driving about in the salt - is thorough rust-proofing everywhere.

Well done

John

Nice to see it looking a lot better than when I saw it earlier in the year. Nice to see the guys repaired things properly with everything welded properly in.
Great job!

John - thanks! This sounds like a very sensible idea. Remember you are talking to someone who can just about manage an oil change at most though!! Would you be able to give me any pointers on what to do - would it be a DIY thing for over Christmas, or do I need to go and see someone who knows what they are doing, point, and get my cheque book out again?!

Mike - thanks - and thanks again for the pointers about what to get fixed. I would have probably procrastinated for another couple of years if I hadn't spoken to you.

Well, either really. It certainly is possible to DIY, but on the other hand if you do the cleaning prep underneath the car properly, you'll get mucky and drenched to the skin, and applying the stuff is very messy as well. It's not the most pleasant job, and even less fun doing it in winter!

Send a PM to 'Steve and his 244'. He has half-finished an article about how to rust-proof a 240; sure he'd let you see what he's got even if it's not finished.

There are a few pics of me doing my Merc here - not exactly the same as your 240 obviously but the the basic principles apply to most cars really:http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpo...4&postcount=22

Cheers

John

Hey Rusty that looks like a great job.

And good to see it done well.

Iv'e been following John's great 160 series restoration thread and had wished there was someone more local who ( I was confident ) would do a similar job for the odd thing I may need doing on one of my 240's.

They are less major than you had done I think - hole in small localised area of offside sill on the doorstep, possibility of hole developing before long in the area where the offside sill joins the rear wing ( door step area again ), and finally the end of the offside outrigger - probably best to replace whole outrigger as the parts are available.

Confidence in the repair is paramount for me.

When I had my 360GLT and it developed two medium sized holes in its offside sill a local garage on Twist Lane in Leigh quoted a total sill replacement for £100 ( that was many years ago ).

I was satisfied with that and booked the job only to find, on collection, they had patch welded the sill with the excuse that a new sill wasn't available.
And the patch welding wasn't that good either - it was obvious to see.
One customer lost to them - never been back since.

I needed the car for work and had to pay for the bodge up to get my car back.

I'm in Greater Manchester too and would be interested to know who did the work for you.

Colin
